Who were the big winners at the opening of NHL free agency? Wed, July 1, 2009 Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke added sandpaper to his roster on the first day of NHL free agency by signing physical defenceman Mike Komisarek. The Flames introduced free agent star Jay Bouwmeester, while many other teams were active. Tell us what you think of their performance.

The Habs could be OK if they re-sign a few more guys like Tanguay and Lang. I'm not sure that Cammalleri is worth $6M/yr, I'd rather pay $1.5M more for Gaborik. Then the Habs make it possible for the Rangers to take Gaborik by taking Gomez off their books. I've never been a big fan of him, but if there were chemistry between Cammalleri and Gomez, then who knows? It doesn't sound like a threatening top line combo though. I guess it depends if they let Tanguay and Lang go for nothing, then they are worse off. These were their two best producing players at various points last year.
The Habs needed Komisarek's grit but I agree that $4.5M is just not worth it. So we'll see who they replace him with.
It's sad how nobody will play in Edmonton and they keep striking out no matter how many dollars they hang out there. But if Ottawa were run by the same guys who handled the Yashin situation, they'd make Heatley play out his contract and produce if he wants out of town. That'd serve him right as far as I'm concerned. The deal with the Oilers certainly wouldn't have made the Sens better so they're better off without it. Tell Heatley he has to work off the $4M he cost the team. 2 fifty goal seasons and then they'd let him out of his contract and trade him where he wants to go.

BURKE is still flapping in the wind...all he did was get rid of a few duds, but got a few more..you think ORR will win you a cup by being in the box over 200 minutes..hahaha..and Komisarek well that was a steal, but he's not an offensive type D who can muster goals...wow 2 in the UFA battle..what a go BURKE..keep yapping and flapping those lips...and see if you "will care a rats ass" by year end... Go Habs

Burke took the neccesary first step by adding grit, lets give him a chance to see how everything unfolds. The Leafs need a complete make over no doubt but trying to do too much at once is not the proper way to build a winner. Keep the faith the rebuild is a work in progress.

I suspect Calgary. The Oilers did ok by not getting Heatley. I wanted them to get a goalie and maybe a stronger defensive defenceman. Maybe the offence will collectively pick it up. They still need a bit of size up front. I think Ottawa did ok by keeping Heatley. Things will Heat up next year if he is still there. very interesting.

Daryll got it done. Brian lost again,... as he did at the draft, looking scared and looking for endorsement.

Gainey is completly ruining this team. He loses Souray, Rivet, Strait, now Komisarek, and adds a bunch of retreads on defense. Small forwards equals no cup in Montreal

Anybody but Komisarek, I can't stand dirty players like this jerk. But he's in good company with Burke, all HAT, no cattle. Looks like MLSE still has control of the purse.

Burke is a Joke!!He is all Talk.Draft day he did nothing.July 1st about the same. Sutter is the man!
