Your reaction to Coyotes court ruling?
Thu, October 1, 2009

Billionaire Jim Balsillie is now 0-for-3 in his attempts to be a National Hockey League owner and Hamilton is oh-for-two decades in its attempts to house an NHL franchise.

And who knows now when any of that is going to change?

That was the sombre reality of the non-decision decision made by U.S. bankruptcy court Judge Redfield T. Baum, who rejected Balsillie's very public bid for the Phoenix Coyotes without prejudice yesterday and also rejected the NHL's bid, leaving it a back-door entrance should it choose to tie up the loose ends of its bid, with which the judge was clearly uncomfortable.

Baum gave the NHL some hope -- and at least control of this situation -- while at the same time striking Balsillie out of the game as a potential purchaser of the bankrupt Coyotes.

U.S. judge blocks Balsillie bid

The NHL does not care about fans. Who cared about the fans when Quebec left or when Winnipeg left to go to the desert. It's too bad the whole issue is about who's ego is big.

If Hamilton gets a professional hockey team I am sure Toronto will want one too.

Hey, I'm all for Winnipeg getting a team...but that city just lost it just a few years ago. Mind you if Minnesota can turn into the Dallas stars and ol' Minnie gets another team then perhaps Winnipeg could do it. I just don't want to see that city end of like Ottawa trying to keep a CFL team...hey maybe Ottawa can get another team and take Winnipegs Bombers cause of the name...LOL

Bob

I don't think the fans are the problem in winnepeg. I think its corporate sponsorship.

Newsflash for all those in the Centre of the Universe: There are more paying hockey fans within 50 miles of Winnipeg than 1000 miles of Phoenix or Atlanta or Tampa or Nashville. We have a new arena and sufficient Corporate support. One of these teams will be in the Peg within 3 years and will likely win a Stanley Cup before the Leafs...bet on it.

Soon to be joined by Detroit, I would think. Talk about a one-horse town!

2000 census is over 9 years old.

The numbers we are told at the city of Hamilton are around the 120-150 mark currently.

Some clarification on Buffalo's population:

There are, according to the U.S. census from 2000, 292,648 people living in Buffalo. The metropolitan area has over 1 million people.

However, one of the issues with Buffalo is its economy. Loss of jobs over the last 10 years in the area has left it one of the poorest cities in the U.S.

Millzie

I have yet to find a sports journalist who has not said that buffalo would fold if Hamilton got a team.

Buffalo's population when it got the team was over 500,000. Its now 120,000.

Most of the fans that go to the games are actually canadians that cross the border. The team is truggling for attendance and funds again. The smallest thing could send it into bankruptcy. Adding a NHL team 40 miles away in the heart of their fan base is not a small thing. ITS HUGE.

Yeah, let's keep a team in the same place where it has lost over $200 million in 10yrs. Good idea.
