Your reaction to Coyotes court ruling?
Thu, October 1, 2009

Billionaire Jim Balsillie is now 0-for-3 in his attempts to be a National Hockey League owner and Hamilton is oh-for-two decades in its attempts to house an NHL franchise.

And who knows now when any of that is going to change?

That was the sombre reality of the non-decision decision made by U.S. bankruptcy court Judge Redfield T. Baum, who rejected Balsillie's very public bid for the Phoenix Coyotes without prejudice yesterday and also rejected the NHL's bid, leaving it a back-door entrance should it choose to tie up the loose ends of its bid, with which the judge was clearly uncomfortable.

Baum gave the NHL some hope -- and at least control of this situation -- while at the same time striking Balsillie out of the game as a potential purchaser of the bankrupt Coyotes.

U.S. judge blocks Balsillie bid

Cudo's to Jim Balsillie for daring to rattle Bettman and his group of stuffed shirts in their ivory tower. How dare he attempt to do something that makes perfect sense like bring the team to Hamilton where it would be one of the top drawing and most successful teams in the NHL.

Those who blame Gary Bettman for the mess the NHL need to know that Bettman is merely an employee of the NHL. He acts according to the wishes of the Board of Governors. These governors represent the interests of the team owners.

Replacing Gary Bettman doesn't change a whole lot, because at the end of the day, it's the same people calling the shots.

As for the Jets and as a Manitoban, we are better off without the NHL in this province. We don't need overpriced hockey players and expensive tickets because well, we've done just fine without the NHL. There's plenty of great hockey around.

WINNIPEG,MB or I swear Manitoba will become another separatist state... I swear it. WTF giving our made in Winnipeg hockey team that greedy Shenkarow sold off for profit, to a have province that already has 2 NHL teams. You Greedy

jerks will soon have 1 less province in Canada - very soon. We're sick of your corporate favoritism & neglect of our province.

The population of Buffalo has fallen every year since 1950 and there economy is in bad shape, last time i checked that wasn't Ontario Hockey fans fault. If it is true that 20%-25% of their fan base comes from Ontario it proves to me they shouldn't have a team to begin with. If both senators are against a move to Hamilton they will be equally be against any move into the Hamilton/Kitchener area. Some have this weird idea that a team in Kitchener, wouldn't have the same effect on Buffalo as Hamilton its so much farther away from hamilton. As far as Kitchener goes, aren't people aware they dont have a arena?? and if this move to Ontario Happens it will be in a year??. A arena there isnt even in the discussion phase and could take 3 years down the road even if you rushed everything (plans, cost, site) not only that unless a expansion team was offered there and there is no expansion plans it isnt going to happen!. In fact because of the Basillie offer this team has no chance of coming to Ontario unless he wins the's plain simple logic. I think this Kitchener talk is just the typical anti-hamilton bias, which is fine but use some common sense not the hate there is for Hamilton. The NHL is fighting re-location...that means unless a court decides its illegal the team isnt moving from Phoneix. The only other long-shot possibilty is if the Maple-Laughs find someone in a few weeks and buy the team and move them to the ACC, which would result in conflict of interest and the competition act and result in a much bigger court case right here in Canada., 2009-05-22 18:58:37

How I would love to see another Canadian hockey team, I don't think it will happen. It's a business and to get money from sponsors television rights and merchandise. You need people and having only a 1 million people to 6 million in a major city, the team will go to 6 million. I see Pheonix staying in the desert for a year or 2 then moving to either Seattle or Houston or even Las Vegas.

dictatorship is what Bettman is all about. What happenned to hockey being a Canadian sport. We need a Canadian to replace Bettman.

This is just the beginning. Someone should do a study on nepatism in the NHL as its becoming rampid that who you know is taking over not talent.

I'm from Winnipeg and was a die hard jets fan. My heart says bring'em back but my head says Winnipeg won't be able to make an NHL team profitable. You would have to sell out the MTS centre every game and have the luxury boxes sold at ridiculous prices. At $200 mil for a team no one here is going to buy one. The Aspers just bought the Bombers and the other wealthy people in this city are not interested in losing money by the millions.

If the NHL does come back to Winnipeg the first thing that will happen is people will complain about the ticket prices and the cost of food and drinks at the MTS centre. The arena will be packed the first year but after that the only sellouts will be for Toronto and Montreal games. Just like the old days. Personally, I don't want to see my Winnipeg suffer the embarrassment that will come with getting and again Losing an NHL team.

Why is the NHL so determined to keep this team in Phoenix? They are bleeding money every game with no end in site. The NHL sure didn't fight that much to keep the teams in Canada! You had better beleive that if Balsillie wanted to move this team somewhere in the US he would have gotten approval and pats on the back for stepping up. I am so tired of the double standard of the NHL.

This is further evidence about what the NHL is all about. It's about business, NOT about hockey.
Derek, 2009-05-22 12:33:01

Hey how bout they go back to WINNIPEG were they really belong.
