Your reaction to Coyotes court ruling?
Thu, October 1, 2009

Billionaire Jim Balsillie is now 0-for-3 in his attempts to be a National Hockey League owner and Hamilton is oh-for-two decades in its attempts to house an NHL franchise.

And who knows now when any of that is going to change?

That was the sombre reality of the non-decision decision made by U.S. bankruptcy court Judge Redfield T. Baum, who rejected Balsillie's very public bid for the Phoenix Coyotes without prejudice yesterday and also rejected the NHL's bid, leaving it a back-door entrance should it choose to tie up the loose ends of its bid, with which the judge was clearly uncomfortable.

Baum gave the NHL some hope -- and at least control of this situation -- while at the same time striking Balsillie out of the game as a potential purchaser of the bankrupt Coyotes.

U.S. judge blocks Balsillie bid

I don't know what the big deal is about putting another NHL team in southern Ontario.

If the demand for NHL hockey is even half as strong as we are led to believe, what makes you think that ticket prices will suddenly become affordable and more readily available?

Get real.

Do yourself a favour and go watch a Marlies or Bulldogs game. Go watch an OHL game. Or better yet, go watch your local junior and senior teams play.

There's great hockey out there that doesn't cost a lot of money. Yeah, it's not the NHL, but it's more about the game and less about how to take your money.

Danny, I shook my head, and it left me asking a whole bunch of questions, like why you think there are only 15-20 hockey markets (which is closer to 10-15 when you factor in proximity between some teams) in all of North America, why you think the NHL wanting to keep a team that has been through multiple changes in ownership and lost hundreds of millions of dollars over a significant period of time is a conservative approach, and why everyone is so quick to connect Toronto and Hamilton?

For Bettman it was personal. If he had it his way there would be no teams in Canada at all.Arrogant ignorance is his strength and not what would be good for hockey.

I'm not sure who's more upset. Myself or my 4 year old son, who would have loved an affordable NHL hockey game. And I live in Scarborough!

Just to comment to David Holt's post.

Interesting comment and yes, the WHA rivaled the NHL and made an impact on professional hockey.

But it was one of the very few upstart rival leagues that actually succeeded to some degree.

Every major sports league has been the target of such upstart leagues. Many of these leagues ended never playing a game. And most that did, didn't last that long or have the desired impact. There are too many examples to even begin naming.

Starting a league to rival the NHL (or any of the major leagues) is a far bigger gamble then most smart businessmen want to take.

That said, Jim Balsillie could start his own league in southern Ontario. But it would have to find its own niche in the local hockey market in order to succeed. It wouldn't be the NHL or anything close to it.

Jim Balsillie wants to own an NHL team, not some small, independent league. He might be better off buying the Coyotes as is and leaving them in Phoenix.

Mr. Bettman is a joke..I think Canada should boycott hockey.. no more Canadian teams playing for stanley cup..Hockey is very sissy-like now with all these new stupid rules.. Again get a new comish..He is a joke fof Canadian hockey fans.. Cheers

I find it pathetic that when Canada lost its NHL teams to the US, the League did not seem to put up the fight they are when teams are up for sale and prospective owners want to move them to Canada, what a freakin double standard.

As an American, I think that this is a great news. Phoenix should be able to have a successful hockey team (no Coyotes are not successful on the ice). Its not fair to make them just move and abandon Phoenix for the dump they call Hamilton. Hamilton isn't even a real city to me. I have been there and that city lacks populations and its own culture. Flyers didnt get good support until they started winning. Neither did the Penguins. Not the other traditional market teams that came after original 6 era.

Dave, give your head a long shake. The reason the NHL is in the trouble that they are in today, is because there are no untapped hockey markets. The NHL is conservatively in about 10 to 15 tapped non-hockey markets today. Hamilton may be a good market in the short term but what about long term if the Leafs get their S#%t together. So Jim, hang onto your money as Hamilton is a good bet in the short term you may need your billons in the long term.

Dave, invest your own money into these untapped hockey Kingdoms if can even find one. A Question, Do you read Steve Simmons by chance; you are both out to lunch, literally!

Its all total bs....let him have the team...it would do the nhl good...and canadians would love another canadian team to support...after all canadians invented the game so let them and balsillie have the team....and it would be in the nhls best interest to let him spend the money to help them out of this financial situation.
