Is Crosby the best in the NHL right now?
Tue, March 24, 2009

Sidney Crosby has been considered the greatest thing since sliced bread for as long as we can remember.

Wayne Gretzky annointed the Cole Harbour, N.S. phenom as most likely to break the Great One's records.

Some say Crosby has lived up to the hype. Others argue he isn’t even the best player on his own team -- let alone in the NHL.

Sun Media writers Randy Sportak and Dave Pollard debate whether Sid the Kid is overrated and overhyped, or is he The Man.

What is your opinion on Crosby? Is he the best player in the NHL right now? Have your say in our forum.

Is Sid the Kid overhyped or unappreciated?

This kind of column shows just the problem a lot of people have - praising flash and dash instead of substance. It's easy to pick on Sid because he comports himself like an all-around decent human. Too bad there are so many that believed the Sens' whining during the playoffs instead of calling the Sens and the officials to task for their crap. Can't think of any other player who would have taken that crap without saying anything, but Sid gets maligned for it. Too many people are like DP, don't want to see the truth. I'll take Sid over AO any day. Stop picking on the kid. So he's been around for a while - shows staying power. AOs antics are going to get old soon.

He's just a hockey player, like a lot of other guys playing the game.

The kid is over hyped, just take a look at where he played junior hockey,It is easy to be a big fish in a little pond and stack up the stats.

Sid is a good player, fantastic athlete, and seems to be a nice guy.

But he doesn't play with passion/heart the way others do. He doesn't seem to have the grit that puts him ahead of others in the league.

He's good, but not the best, top 5, but not THE top.

One more thing, line mates dont mean much, look at all the great players, mario had no one early in his career, who is wendel young, a nobody, iggy scores 50 with conroy, a plumber, ovie first season not much there mayber chris clark. The thing about great players is that they make everyone around them better. Cryosby had players that could score, but couldnt do it, Its not like malkin had better players to play with.

I wish people that want to talk about hockey, actually know what is going on in hockey. These two writers say Crosby is only one who kills penalities, but if you look at stats malkin and ovie play more short handed minutes than cryosby. Cryosby is not even in the top four of penalty killers on his team. Cryosby should quit crying and concentrate on hockey, he's got skill but he just has to put everything to be great. The only reason don cherry hates ovie is because he is russian. If cryosby was not canadian he would not get all the attention that he gets. I would say the best player in the league right now is praise, because for a team not known for scoring, they sure have a great top 5 scoring.

Despite a small margin that separates the three in scoring, I truly believe that you cannot pick between Crosby, Malkin and Ovechkin for the best in the league. (And it really kills me to say that, I am a HUGE Crosby fan).

The debate will never die, nor will it get old, but really, how can you pick between the three??

dave pollard was incorrect in almost everything he said. how is jarome iginla considered mr do it all when he plays with mike camellari, olli jokinen, dion, and kipprusoff. thats a supporting cast. crosby is the best in the league and i will give you a good reason why. he plays a team game. if you look at washington its all pass to ovechkin. and mike richards is a good player but how can you consider him better than crosby when he is having his best offensive year and is no were close to crosby in scoring? and how did ovechkin do in the playoffs last year? philly ran him to the boards and you didnt hear from him anymore. while crosby made it all the way to the finals and played the goliath of the league in detroit. with ovechkin its all me me me. just look at his response to don cherry. he cleary says dont watch 'my game'.. what do you mean your game you play for a team. i could see maybe if ovechkin scored 50 goals in 39 games like gretzky then he could feel some heat from his stick.

there is no way that Sidney is the best in the league. Is he up there? Yes. But he is not an all around player. Malkin repeatedly plays better and harder every day and doesn't whine about it. Sid will get there with maturity but he alone has to want it more.
eric Waugh, 2009-03-25 17:17:06

He's not as good as Malkin but Malkin isn't as good as Thorton or a few others IMHO.

He will likely be one of the greats of his time and a hall of famer.
