Hiring Martin right move for Habs?
Mon, June 1, 2009

BRUCE GARRIOCH, SUN MEDIA

PITTSBURGH -- There will be a familiar face behind the Montreal Canadiens bench.

The Habs have called a news conference for today where they're expected to name Jacques Martin as their head coach.

League sources say Martin has stepped down from his post as GM of the Florida Panthers because of the financial instability of the club and the possibility they may be sold.

Martin will be a solid choice for the Habs. He will bring stability and could help get the club back to respectability.

Is this the right move for the Habs? Can Martin turn around this team? Have your say in our forum.

Habs to hire Martin

So Carbo now says he didn't "see it coming" in reference to his sacking. Nor did Hartsburg in Ottawa and< i'm sure, Reney in NY (I hope I spelled his name correctly) and Laviolette in Carolna.

In each case the bottom line was - the team concerned was perceived as under-achieving, so something had to be done. Maurice and Tortorella have seemed to turn things around in Carolina and New York, and although they have little or no chance of making the playoffs, the Sens are clearly playing better under Clouston.

At this time the jury is still out on the Gainey and the Habs, although it doesn't appear to be working any better. One reasons is, each of NY, Carolina and Ottawa made deals to improve their on-ice product at or near the trade deadline. Montreal did not. And that could be their ultimate undoing.

All I can say is, they had better be ready tomorrow when they visit the Sens and later the Leafs after having had their "fans" ridicule Ottawa and Toronto on several occasions this season, singing them off the ice with their idiotic "nah nah, hey hey, kiss him goodbye" routine. Players have long memories and what goes around comes around.

Habs lose again Saturday nite to Brodour & the Devils in a game which displayed much of what is wrong with this team! No heart, offense and a timid D. Goalie played well but 40+ shots allowed is too many for a playoff bound team. Gainey's record is now 1-1-1, with Don Lever on the bench & Patric R. lurking in the background.

Not the kind of inspiration this team needs! Kovolev is injured??? or asked to sit again. Higgins showed up in the first but like the rest took a skate in the 2nd & 3rd periods.

Yet another poor display from the Habs. Price was solid again but he will not be able to get them into the post season alone. My prediction is still the Habs will be playing golf with the Leafs soon.

16 games to go. I'm hoping that this is the kick in the butt that the team needs, and Gainey behind the bench will communicate the responsibilities loud and clear.

As I mentioned in a prior entry, there are several issues to fix in order to make a run in the playoffs.

We'll see what Gainey is made of now, and we'll see what this team is made of too.

Go Habs!

We, as fans, can talk all we want about what happened in Montreal and why Gainey fired Carbo but, in the end, it was a gutsy thing to do. Gainey isn't a miracle worker but he is a solid thinker and people listen when he talks. So, let's give him a chance starting tonight and we will judge him in a few games as to whether he made the right decision. Frankly, I think it is too late for the Habs and they look like they will miss the playoffs this year. For shame!

On last nights sports I looked at Bob Gainey's record as a coach and it is not good. Carbonneau has a much better record. Bob is going to make himself look bad.

Exactly, moderator, re Hartley. He's from around Hawksbury on the Quebec-Ontario border - same area as Jacques Martin.

Bob Hartley is not French? Despite his anglophone name, Hartley is a Franco-Ontarian.

Mikey416 No chance Hartley will be the coach my friend as he is not french.

This franchise is heading for a big wake up call and there is no chance they will win a Stanley cup this year.
