Boxing or MMA: Which is the legitimate fighting sport?
Sat, February 14, 2009

What’s the most heated debate in Canadian sports today? No, not fighting in hockey or whether the NFL is more entertaining than the CFL. It’s MMA vs. boxing. Sun Media writers Jose Rodriguez and Murray Greig trade verbal punches and kicks — and maybe some ground and pound — as they argue which sport deserves the championship belt.

Jose Rodriguez has been covering mixed-martial arts for Sun Media since before it was fashionable. He has sat cageside for everything from UFC events to smokers. He was the first major print journalist in Canada to write about MMA and one of the first in North America. He currently writes a weekly column and is the chief contributor to The Scrapyard blog.

Starting with Ali-Spinks II, Murray Greig has covered Canadian and international boxing for the past 30 years and has attended 55 national, British Commonwealth and world title bouts. He trained former Canadian light heavyweight champ Danny Stonewalker for a world title challenge against Michael Moorer in 1990, and in 1996 authored the best-selling book, Goin’ the Distance: Canada’s boxing heritage.

It's like comparing apples to oranges. Both are legitimate combat sports, and both take courage, training and heart to excel. I like what Roy Jones is doing with his promotion and offering a mixed card. An event with top notch boxing and MMA... brilliant!

I have watched boxing for years. I have seen all kinds of fixes and cheating. I have followed the UFC at the same time and have found it to be more entertaining and to have better athletes.

The fighters in the UFC do not have to take a beating relentlessly after getting a standing 8. IF you are out, you are out in the UFC.

Last words, Don King.

Maybe it's a legitimate sport, but I have no interest in it.

Boxing used to be great; you could watch a fight on a Saturday night on normal TV.

Nowadays, you have to pay for cable or satellite - then on top of that you have to pay extra to see fights.

After the Seventies, boxing went way down. In the Seventies and earlier, you had great names in boxing like Ali, Fraser, Foreman, etc.

Nowadays, who knows who are the top fighters. Not the same charisma.

i hate to say it because i always loved boxing. but its in trouble everybody is following mma now

Unfortunately for mr.Greig he is stuck in a time that was. From Ali/Foreman, Hearns/Hagler,Holyfield/Bowe, Tyson/Holyfield...Ahhh the glory days of a wonderful sport, now on life support. Those days are long gone mr.Greig and it's time for you to move on.The mma has arrived and it's full steam ahead.Your beloved boxing is just one of many disciplines on display by these fantastic athletes. There are not 150 different middleweight champions. There are not 30 million dollar purses for has-beens,see Oscar De la Hoya, who by the way has seen the writing on the wall, and has invested heavily in one of the mma organizations. I, like you mr. greig was a huge boxing fan, and will still tune in from time to time, but there's a new kid in town, and it's bigger, badder, and yes, better. It's the MMA.I'm not saying to stop watching boxing, but to open your eyes...you might like what you see. I sure as hell did.

Tickets for a dull-as-dishwater MMA show at the River Cree: $300.

Tickets for an action-packed pro boxing card at the Shaw Centre: $90.

Seeing Murray Greig 'ground and pound' Jose Rodriguez in this non-debate: Priceless!

Never pull your punches, Murray. The MMA crowd just can't compete.

Wow. I can hardly believe how ignorant Murray Grieg revealed himself to be. Every statement he made was unsupportable drivel. Aclub boxer knocking out an MMA champ? Ridiculous! MMA being a North American phenomenon? What about Brazil, Japan, Korea, and England, just to name a few? Perhaps the single most ignorant statement(and it's tough to pick just one) is his asinine comparison between "Ghetto Fights" Clearly, Mr. Grieg has absolutely no idea what he's talking about, and based on his boxing credentials, i don't think he even qualifies as a boxing expert. For those who are curious, Mr. Griegs "boxing champ" Danny Stonewalker retired with a record of 13 wins, 11 losses, and 3 draws, with almost all his wins coming against fighters with losing records. By Murray Griegs logic, Mr Stonewalker would KO Anderson Silva or Georges St. Pierre easily. Absolutely ludicrous. And any legitimate boxing expert would see that.He should be ashamed of himself, as should any of these fools who agree with his feeble arguments.
Harris Blake, 2009-02-15 16:11:23

What a mismatch. This argument is like wathcing a mma poof tap-out against the heavyweight champ. Greig comes out swinging for the fences and scores a quick KO with the "squeals like a pig" line. Time to tap-out Mr. Jose. You just got whupped.
carl, 2009-02-14 21:15:13

wow, murray is just so ignorant and doesnt want to bother giving it a try, its way more entertaining. as to the ground game, if a fighter can get out of a bad situation then it just shows how good of a fighter you are at getting out of bad situations. your just ignorant, and i have seen boxing i watched it and i liked it, if i have an opened mind for boxing, u should have an opened mind for mma

Bravo, Murray! "Third World backwaters, like Britain"

You better worry about your job - your the first Sun Media writer I've ever read that doesn't grovel to all things British. Your arguments were humorus, but smart ... unlike Jose.

I hope you continue to call it like you see it, Greig. Your the man!
