Why are the Canucks struggling?
Tue, January 20, 2009

HOSEA CHEUNG, SUN MEDIA

Mired in a club-record seven-game home-losing skid, the Vancouver Canucks has strayed from the style that general manager Mike Gillis molded them to become ever since his tenure began.

The rookie GM wanted a gritty team. He wanted a team that opponents would be afraid to play against.

So during the off-season, Gillis brought in enforcer Darcy Hordichuk, Shane O'Brien, Rob Davison and Steve Bernier, who currently leads the team in hits.

These bruising additions, along with Kevin Bieksa, Mattias Ohlund, Alex Burrows, Willie Mitchell, Mike Brown and more, aimed to imitate the physicality like the Cup-winning Anaheim Ducks two years ago.

But all that has leveled off in the past few weeks.

What do you think is wrong with the Canucks? And why are they struggling with Mats Sundin and Roberto Luongo in the lineup? Have your say in our forum

The Canucks have no depth in scoring. The Sedins were fine as a second line but as the primary go-to guys they have no-one behind them. Toughness is good but toughness alone can't win games.

Hmmmm. The lack of input to this thread should put to rest those complaints that this site is too Toronto/Ottawa-centric. It seems that, whenever a thread is started dealing with ANY of the other teams - including the Habs - the input is minimal.

That first line should read: "Aftermath of an idiotic signing, i.e., the Sundin one."

Aftermath of an idiotic signing lime the Sundin one. He and his agent saw someone coming from "Canuckistan" and that someone has to be the GM who gives a whole new meaning to "falling off the turnip truck." The second it became clear that the world economy was going into the toilet he should have told Sundin "bye bye - make the best deal you can elsewhere."

But then the NHL wouldn't be the NHL without its stupid owners and even dumber GMs.

this group is circled around thier stud goaltender and thats it he falls the team falls and now there luck is running out luongo is feeling the weight on is back and now its showing.... not that he starting to not be a good goalie but he cant carry the team the whole season..... as for sundin well he really should of thought of making a decision at the beginning of the season cause he has not made an impact yet... and when you join a team struggling to score goals and now are starting to drop and lose confidence and i think its too late in the season for him to pick it up...... they may make the playoffs if luongo plays as well as we know he can but it wont take them far

Luongo goes down and the team is doing it with mirrors. Now they bottom out and Luongo is just coming back.

All the experts said the Canucks would have trouble scoring at the start of the year, Bobby Lou would save them.

Even with Sundin there it's still all about keeping as many pucks as possible from going in.

last time I checked the object of the game was to score more goals than the opposing team not hit them more or harder.
