Does fighting belong in hockey?
Tue, February 10, 2009

By John Miner and the Canadian Press

A London anti-violence expert is applauding recommendations from a panel on concussions that call for the elimination of fighting from all levels of hockey.

Peter Jaffe said the report could be the tipping point that changes the culture of the game.

The recommendations, resulting from meetings at the London Hockey Concussion Summit on Jan. 17-18, also calls from an elimination of high hits/head hits.

Does fighting belong in hockey? Is it an integral part of the game, or can the game of hockey survive and thrive with the inclusion of fisticuffs? Have your say in our forum.

Report calls for end to fights

Keep fighting in the game, however, let's fine tune this thing so we don't end up breaking the greatest game on the planet. For one thing, let's start with a 1 game suspension every time u do not keep your gloves on during a fight, this will negate the need to remove one's helmet which in turn would give protection when a player does fall to the ice and hit his head. Keeping th e gloves on will still allow the aggression to be released and everyone remains at status quo and less injuries will occur. Last thought, take out the F**kin instigator rule!!!! IT DOESN'T SERVE A PURPOSE!!

Another stupid discussion by the moralists who foolishly assume we care what they think. Here are some more ideas for those bandwagon clowns to hop all over. Players get hurt with sticks...let's ban them. Someone got cut with a skate..let's ban them as well. Someone got hit with a puck...gotta ban them. Get a life! If you don't like the fights, go watch ringette. Nobody cares. There are a pile of other dainty little rah-rah activities you can be involved in between manicures

Hi Bubbles, I assume your name reflects you Gray Matter.

The fact that fighting "is part of the game" is not valid.

Hockey flurishes around the world without it.

Yes there a "cheap shots" and serious infractions.

It is to critisize something without offering a solution. Try this.

The NHL must change their view on Referies. They do not have the necessary control requiered. It would soon becomme apparent to owners if a first cheap shot, etc, got an instant game misconduct. Not 2 mins, a nice rest. Second infraction, 3 game suspension.

There is a lot of talk about a milionair getting a $50,00.00 fine and it is no big deal. I agree, no big deal. A secon major is worth, not a set amount, but 5% of his salary, a third, 10%. The taem would be requied to match the amonts.

How long do you think it would take for the message to sink in. Hockey is a wonderful sport. Make it enjoyable for all concerned.

This discussion drives me crazy! Fighting IS a part of hockey, and to anyone who thinks it should be taken out: Open your ears next time a couple heavyweights go at it! The fans love it! Fighting is what keeps the game from becoming a dirty hack-fest. What should be taken out of hockey... is the instigator rule!!!

Burks wrong, back in the good old days . there were fights, put not as it is today, hockey is skills in movements on ice. Not to fight, but to control their tempers.

If fighting is banned in Hockey ,all we will see is a bunch of players writhing on the ice , like a bunch of soccer players. No thanks .

Lets not turn the greatest game into a farce like soccer.

Bettman will soon have his way. The NHL will be the NBA on ice. As few Canadian teams as possible, with a totally bland product. No fighting. Look sideways at an opposing player, 2 in the box. Tell him his girlfriend slept around...suspended for life!

What beats me is why Y'Alls even watch basketball in the first place. The only body contact is lame, the players get "hurt" really easily, and when there is a fight it's more b****h-slapping than fisticuffs.

Are there fighting drills in hockey practice? No. Therefore, fighting is not part of the game. Fighting is plain poor sportsmanship. End of story.

wow, can't believe I'm going to say I agree with Burke. Yes, fighting belongs and yes, if it taken out the rats will have free reign on the ice.....

more fighting in baseball?

Are you serious.

Just out of curiousity though, in baseball when you fall down does your exposed head hit super hard ice that can kill you?
