Does fighting belong in hockey?
Tue, February 10, 2009

By John Miner and the Canadian Press

A London anti-violence expert is applauding recommendations from a panel on concussions that call for the elimination of fighting from all levels of hockey.

Peter Jaffe said the report could be the tipping point that changes the culture of the game.

The recommendations, resulting from meetings at the London Hockey Concussion Summit on Jan. 17-18, also calls from an elimination of high hits/head hits.

Does fighting belong in hockey? Is it an integral part of the game, or can the game of hockey survive and thrive with the inclusion of fisticuffs? Have your say in our forum.

Report calls for end to fights

I have no problem with a fight that happens as a result of a tense, hardhitting game, and is a heat of the moment action.

What I don't agree with is the "planned fight" as soon as a puck is dropped. THAT just does'nt belong and is Not "part of the game".

fighting is the hockey players way of policing the game when the referees don't. If there was a way of seeing every jab, elbow, slash, and then calling it fairly and evenly then fighting would become obsolete, but until that time the players referee themselves on ice by fighting when it becomes necessary.

Fighting is part of the game, but constant fighting is not.

A good game has no fights or maybe 1 or 2 fights.

Look at the playoff - fewer fights and really intense hockey.

I'm not against fighting, but I'm tired of seeing a lot of it in hockey.

Hockey is mainly about skill (stickhandling, shooting, skating), and fighting should be relegated to a minor spot.

as long there are bettmans around who are only looking out for corporate owners, and profits major leauge sports has become dominated buy the shareholder who only cares about the bottom line as long dirty hits fighting draws crowds it means money so dont exspect it to change to soon and to guy who sees more fighting in baseball someone is selling bad crap

fighting adds excitement to the game, its a bunch of million airs out for a skate and its got real sickening soft

Clean fighting is O.K

dirty hits to the head should be handled if the player is out for a period of time the hitter is gone the same lenght of time But it won`t happen .

Fighting is, always has been, and always should be a part of the game. Fights have been in the game from the very beginning and would change the game drastically if eliminated. I like the roughness in the game. If fighting was eliminated the "pacifists" would then ask for hard hitting to be eliminated next. Why don't they watch woman hockey (no offense, I watch that too) and leave the real ho0ckey the way it is. Get rid of the goons who can't play and leave the "players" who can fight in the game. Recently I saw a past Montreal vs Quebec Nordique game where there was a bench clearing brawl...brought back memories of the good old days.

I am sick of this topic. Why not ask questions about the leafs goaltending and why they let Clemmenson go. Seems who ever palys in net for the Devils thye win. Because they know how to play defense.

No, fighting does not belong in hockey. The other night I watch Zach Stortini from Edmonton beating up on Alexei Semenov from San Jose. What did this fight prove, except that Stortini is an idiot.
