What will you remember most about the 96th Grey Cup?
Sun, November 23, 2008

The Calgary Stampeders came back twice to beat the home team Montreal Alouettes 22-14 in the 2008 Grey Cup.

The Stampeders needed five field goals from the foot of kicker Sandro DeAngelis, named the top Canadian, to prevent the Alouettes from becoming the first team since 1994 (B.C. Lions) to win the Grey Cup on their home field. And Henry Burris, 'Smilin' Hank' to Stamps fans, got the trophy he most coveted.

The 96th version of the Grey Cup certainly wasn't the offensive explosion we've come to expect from CFL championship games. But there were some entertaining moments and both teams moved the ball almost at will, only to come up short of the end zone.

What are your thoughts on the game? What stands out the most for you?

Reid is obviously no football fan.

I was surprised that many annalists and fans thought this game would be so high scoring. Both of these defenses were pretty good at shutting down their opponents over the last 12 games anyway.

A one score ball game in doubt until the end. It doesn't get much better then that regardless of the point total. The best part was Avon Coborn running his mouth and then never being heard from again as the game slipped away.

Reid, the ratings for the CFL are higher than they've ever been, as are season ticket sales and merchandising. The lack of a franchise in Ottawa has nothing to do with the state of the CFL and more to do bad ownership groups. Theory of a Deadman was the only good part? Are you serious? Theory of a Nickelback are one of the most whitewashed uninteresting music acts going. That statement tells me your taste in music is as abysmal as your football sense. FYI, Im in my late 20's, and still love the CFL. Go Eskies in 2010!

For starters I am a youngish, well travelled senior who cares passionately about my country and always felt the Grey Cup personified what is good about Canada. I vividly recall the euphoria which followed the Esks win in '56, the green Riders in '66 and the Stamps in '71. Now it appears the Grey Cup has been degraded into a corporate money and television ratings grabfest. The one recent live Grey Cup game I was able to attend struck me as one continuous rolling commercial, but that is present day reality and requires an adjustment on my part. As I read other comments I am saddened by the generational disconnect about what the Grey Cup should mean as a whole rather than focus on the quality/name recognition of the half-time entertainers. The organizers are trying their best. Let us hope that a team will be restored in Ottawa and perhaps a team in the Maritimes someday. The CFL is uniquely Canadian, let us support it in spite of the minor irritants.

LMAO!!

haha im in my mid 20s buddy! ive had seasons tix with my friends of the same age for 5 or 6 years and have been going to games all my life...altho, i am speaking for the west i.e. BC, edm, cal and sask where the game is ok...pretty much a joke in the east, give you that much....

and wtf are the nylons?? Ian Tyson?? altho they are probaly better than baby Nickleback eeerrr theory of a deadman
jaydaybay, 2008-11-24 11:45:17

Oh yeah Jay, the CFL is doing great.... no team in the nation's capital and not a fan in the country under the age of 50. LMAO!

Thanks for your opinion! It's always nice to hear from the aging CFL diehards :-) I presume you would have liked to see The Nylons or Ian Tyson as the halftime show?
Reid, 2008-11-24 11:20:31

lol thanks for your opinion reid...but the league is actually in the best shape its seen in a while...and theory of a deadman? obviously not a football fan AND bad taste in music...cheers whiner

anyway, average game with a lot surrounding it, making it worth the watch...im a stamps homer so obviously i found the game intriguing, congrats to hank and the whole team for pulling thru clutch when they had to...feel for AC after how much has given to the league and mtl...but...stamps were the best team in the league for most the year and again yesterday...hank was far better than AC, offense was as advertised and the defense bent but never broke under the pressure for the second big game in a row...stamps are the champs...see you next year
jaydaybay, 2008-11-24 10:23:51

The league needs to make some rule changes. same old plays , same old strategies, bigger equipment, slower players, how about less players? or allow throws backward , really spice up the game. can't watch the same teams every year...zzzz. I know put ice on the field and give everyone a stick! make it really exciting watching the big guys go to it. I'd buy a ticket to go see that!

The game wasn't your typical Grey cup Game it was a little boring, I don't think TSN hyped it up like they should of, they seemed to call it just like any other game, maybe next year they will call it a with a little more exitement,as for the halftime show it "SUCKED"! I wish the CFL would realize that not everyone who watches the game is 12
jimf, 2008-11-24 10:06:25

Well, teh CFL tried, but it's hard to cheer for the player introductions when most of them are unrecognizable to any but the hard core fans.

The opening ceremonies were lame and the game was boring. What can I say... this league is in big trouble.

Thank God for Theory of a Deadman as the halftime show or it would have been a complete waste of 3+ hours.
