What will you remember most about the 96th Grey Cup?
Sun, November 23, 2008

The Calgary Stampeders came back twice to beat the home team Montreal Alouettes 22-14 in the 2008 Grey Cup.

The Stampeders needed five field goals from the foot of kicker Sandro DeAngelis, named the top Canadian, to prevent the Alouettes from becoming the first team since 1994 (B.C. Lions) to win the Grey Cup on their home field. And Henry Burris, 'Smilin' Hank' to Stamps fans, got the trophy he most coveted.

The 96th version of the Grey Cup certainly wasn't the offensive explosion we've come to expect from CFL championship games. But there were some entertaining moments and both teams moved the ball almost at will, only to come up short of the end zone.

What are your thoughts on the game? What stands out the most for you?

Not much. I didn't watch it.

The most that I will remember is that it was played in Montreal!

The MVP went to the wrong player. When you have a DE disrupt the offence like Labinjo did he needs to be considered. When the QB engineers ONE touchdown and they settle for 5 field goals the MVP is the kicker not the QB who can't close the deal. I would vote for the DE, he is a KEEPER.

I didn't see Burris and occasionally Calvillo having too much trouble putting together drives with only three downs. Yes, it was frustrating kicking the ball away much of the time, but I think the three downs did force them to pass more without many attempts to grind out 2 yard gains on the rush.

I went to the game and despite the age of the Olympic Stadium, it was a great event if not a great game itself. Montreal knows how to stage a party and the CFL fans are the best.

It was weird having cheerleaders from all teams there, lots of eye candy that my old eyes couldn't appreciate from a distance. But it did reflect the crowd, a mix of fans and jerseys from every team so I guess it did make a bit of sense.

The difference to me was that both times Calvillo was forced to go long, he had a man with a jump on the defender and instead he threw short and turned the ball over. Touchdowns in both cases and at least one of the two Stamps not dropping the ball on the goal line would have made this a good game.

Well, the winning team kicked 5 field goals - would you call that lack of success in (or near) the 'red zone' a showcase for a National championship? And, in case you forgot, last year's game was a clunker also.

I'm an older guy, saw the great 1961 Eastern final with the great Bernie Faloney, live in Hamilton's 'Civic Stadium'. Lost interest in the 70's. Too many stalled drives, lopsided outcomes, and idiot calls by the Refs (don't get me started).

I have lobbied for rule changes since, only to have Bob on Fan590 tell me that to preserve the 'wide-open' nature of the CFL, I need to come up with a way to offer '3 1/2 downs'.

Yes, I think a QB needs 4 downs in the Modern Age, with the kind of defences and game analysis available to coaching staffs everywhere. Or haven't you noticed that '3rd and two' is passing down in the NFL?

Anyway, all these CFL QB's are imports, who have played for 4 to 8 years with 4 downs. They come here and have to play with only 3 downs, so that the CFL can be 'different'. Ouch.

- Are you telling me that this game wouldn't have had improved scoring with 4 downs? Keep the motion, keep the 12 players, keep the stupid scoring - keep it all - JUST GIVE US 4 DOWNS.. ok?

- I know - some diehard will say "oh, that's boring, they'll run every play!" - huh? you already have boring!

AC chokes again.

I thought the younger faster quarterback won the game. Buriss draws and scrambles kept the Montreal D off balance in the second half and extended many drives eating up the clock. It was a true CFL style performance that's won Grey Cups for everyone from Kenny Ploen and Russ Jackson to Doug Flutie and Matt Dunigan. Any team without a mobile quatch is living on borrowed time in this league.

Reid.

I'm an Als season ticket holder for years. I do fit your description having just turned 50, but I've been following since my teens. I played amateur football when a kid although I stopped when I was 16.

The CFL game is a very entertaining brand of football, and it is it's own game. 3 down football and the rules allow for a faster game than the NFL game. (Which I like too)

You know, there is a lot of history to the CFL game, and while this Grey Cup was more about defence and missed opportunities - there's been many offensive shows put on through the years.

The best part of the CFL is that it's CANADIAN, and it gives a chance for our own University players to play pro ball.

While there are a lot of Americans playing in the CFL, they have a lot of respect for our game that is played on a wider and longer field.

You are entitled to your own opinion of course, but if football really does interest you - you should check out the history of this game.

Congrats to the Stamps! They played a heck of a 2nd half and are full merit for the win.

The defenses held the offenses down and the game came down to timely play calls and execution.

Better luck next time to the Als. They had a good season

but they really were second best.

I'm already looking forward to the beer, cheerleaders and watching the Als for another year at the stadium.
