Are head injuries a big concern for the NHL?
Tue, November 18, 2008

RANDY SPORTAK, SUN MEDIA

Calgary Flames defenceman Cory Sarich appreciates the heads-up from the league but would like a little clarification.

Head shots are a hot-button topic around the NHL these days, and the league's senior vice-president and director of hockey operations, Colin Campbell, fired off a memo to all teams saying enough is enough.

"We cannot and will not tolerate blows to the head that are deliberate, avoidable and illegal" is a key line to the letter for all the league's players.

Sarich, who has thrown his share of hard checks over his career, understands what the league means by deliberate and illegal.

As for what's avoidable, that's a pretty big grey area.

Are head injuries a big concern for the NHL? Have your say in our forum.

There are already rules in place to punish a player for an improper hit. i.e. hitting from behind, boarding, intent to injure, just to name a few. I don't think there is concern for head injuries in regards to the player throwing the check. The majority of examples I've seen or read about are because the player that gets hit is out of position or looking at the lovely pass he just made. He's not looking around to see who's playing the game & is about to throw a shoulder into him. Teach the players how to keep their head on a swivel & their head won't be in a position to get hit. Watch the tapes of Stevens hitting Lindros. Was Stevens trying to give him a head injury or throw a good check on a player with his head down? For anyone who's played hockey, they will know the difference.

I had no problem with what the Calgary players had to say right up until Regehr wants the "Type of game" to be considered. What has that got to do with anything. A head shot is a head shot in an up tempo game or a hard checking game or a playoff game. This makes as little sense as basing the punishment on the extent of the injury to the players. It should be based on the intent of the player which in most cases is painfully obvious. Until the NHL gets that part straight, this is all just talk.
