What does the future hold for Brian Burke?
Thu, November 13, 2008

Brian Burke turned down a contract extension to remain general manager of the Anaheim Ducks, citing the need to spend more time with his family and the strong state of the team he helped turn into a Stanley Cup champion as reasons for leaving.

He was replaced by Bob Murray, who has spent the past three seasons in the Ducks' front office.

Suddenly, Burke has emerged as one of the top candidates for teams looking to snag a GM with a marquee name and an impressive track record.

What does the future hold for Burke? Which team do you see him joining down the road? Have your say in our forum.

Burke is Toronto bound, to bad as Fletcher has taken a near impossible task and turned the team around along with the coach, whom Cliff hired.A lot of us out west still miss Cliff as GM of the Flames, Toronto fans should give a big thankyou to Cliff when he leaves, you will miss him, he is a great hockey man.....

He'll go to Toronto and when he gets there he'll be bigger than Mats himself.

The sports writers are building the new throne as we speak.

Don't care muich for Burke or the Leafs... so I guess it'd be a good fit as far as I'm concerned.

He is nothing special...like Doug said he inherited the Ducks with millions of $$ in cap space...beefed up the defense with two great Canadians. He did nothing for Vancouver...just look at them. The past 2 GM's did nothing but messed the whole system up...I could do better than that. The league is faster these days without the clutching & grabbing. Buffalo figured this out 2 years ago and contended. Other teams are starting to figure this out now. It should be a fast paced game. Fletch traded the garbage away and got some garbage back, but clearly a move in the right direction. Hey Leafs, if you want me at 1/2 Burkes salary, give me a call and I will sure think about it!

Cheers!

I agree wholeheartedly with Doug and gord. I dont understand why he is considered such a prize for GM. He did a very average job in Vancouver, and that was when Bertuzzi and Naslund were at the pinnacles of their careers. Then he basically inherited a team that Brian Murray built, had Niedermeyer and Pronger fall into his lap, and this makes him a genius? Leafs Nation: Speak up and demand that Fletch stay. He's done a great job so far, the Leafs have actually been a dynamic and fun team to watch so far this year. Fletch is actually rebuilding the team, while Burke is fairly well known for favoring veterans. Bringing in Burke would assure the Leafs of more futility.

Burke not only has a alpha personality he is part neanderthal and a bully, which worked when he was with the NHL. As to being choice GM material, he is less than average. when push came to shove over the Penner situation, Lowe buried him and what did he do..nothing except have Bettman save his ass.

I can't fathom why the pundits are so high on Burke. What has he done in the NHL that is in anyway remarkable? He mostly inherited the talent on the Ducks who won the cup. He floundered with the Vancouver Canucks. Sure he is an alpha personality who makes notworthy comments for the media, but other than that, I just don't get it.

What does the future hold for Burke? If he ends up going to Toronto, it will be the end of an impressive track record.

He'll have no problem finding a team with ownership that is willing to win. In Toronto, that just won't happen.

Now that you Toronto writers have beat to death the Mats story you can start on the Brian Burke migration and bore the hell out of the rest of the nation.

Burke would be a perfect fit for TO.. he is such an A...HOLE.
