What does the future hold for Brian Burke?
Thu, November 13, 2008

Brian Burke turned down a contract extension to remain general manager of the Anaheim Ducks, citing the need to spend more time with his family and the strong state of the team he helped turn into a Stanley Cup champion as reasons for leaving.

He was replaced by Bob Murray, who has spent the past three seasons in the Ducks' front office.

Suddenly, Burke has emerged as one of the top candidates for teams looking to snag a GM with a marquee name and an impressive track record.

What does the future hold for Burke? Which team do you see him joining down the road? Have your say in our forum.

At first blush I thought Burke would be the answer to the Leafs troubles until I looked at his unimpressive record. Now that Fletcher has turned the team in the right direction do we really need Burke to come along and wreck things.Or will he get lucky by making a few trades and taking the credit for Fletchers work like he did in Anaheim.I don't believe he is the answer for all that is wrong in Leafland.

Brian Burke has no history of brilliance, so why will the Leafs suddenly become contenders once he arrives?

Like david said, he got lucky and stumbled into a championship in anaheim. Niedermayer signed there because his brother was already there and Pronger practically begged to go anywhere but edmonton. Pure DUMB LUCK for Burke. those two incidents, plus a great team which was already assembled when he got to Anaheim are what won the cup, whether Burke was GM or not.

Brian Burke is definitely overrated and over-hyped. This is typical TO media hype and build-up. He got fired as GM by the Canucks for under-achieving, and now he will be the Leafs' Saviour? I do not think so. What has changed? Anaheim won the Stanley Cup because it was a ready built team when he got there. Don't plan the parade for Yonge Street just yet! If good hockey men like Cliff Fletcher and Ken Dryden couldn't get the Cup to Toronto, I doubt that a lesser GM that Brian Burke is will succeed.

Just sign with the Leafs already. I want to watch the sports highlights, instead I keep getting this stupid soap opera.

Ley him come to Toronto... he won't fare any better than anyone else has in the past 40 years. He's over rated. He left Vancouver in ruins and won a Cup with Brian Murray's team in Anaheim. He got VERY lucky when Pronger and Niedermayer landed in his lap. If you give Burke much credit for the Cup win you're crazy. The Leafs will still suck once Burke comes to town.
David, 2008-11-17 15:39:09

I hope the first move he makes as GM is to aquire Kyle Wellwood.

Seriously, when did Burke rope the moon? How'd he do in Vancouver? Fired.

It's the best the Leafs could do. Gainey, Holland, and Lou Lamerello all said "hell no" to coming to the Leafs.
Shawn, 2008-11-17 12:26:38

Burke and the Leafs deserve each other.

The GM Of The Century, with

Canada's Team, in The Capital Of The World!

I can sense a collective orgasm coming the second he put his John Henry on the line saying Sign Here!

MLSE, The Leafs Network, TSN, and the rest of the Toronto media will begin

the promoting of blocking downtown traffic to hold daily practice Stanley Cup parades!

Crowds of adoring fans will throw rose petals and rice

in the daily celebration!

Newborns will be brought to the ACC in hopes of receiving a kiss from the

God of hockey GM's!

Seriously, Fletcher's done a pretty good job so far and if Burke does sign with the Buds, there's no way he could do worse than J.F.J.

It's obvious to even the most casual observer that the TO media want Burke there as, combined with the equally-acerbic Wilson, it guarantees an unending supply of quotes and column-fodder. That's his attraction. Certainly not his record as a GM as several have already pointed out here.
Gary O., 2008-11-15 07:14:58

If Burke comes to the leafs, there will be a lot of hoopla for a while, but he is not the answer...trader cliff is head and shoulders sharper than burke...but like they do with quality players that could have a positive impact, they will let Cliff and settle for less...why should they worry, they are sold out every game, even if they put mannequins in uniform, and on the ice....

TOO BAD< Fletcher is the right guy to do a successful transition to winning..

What does the future hold for Brian Burke?

I don't know, my crystal ball is broken.
