What's wrong with the Senators?
Sat, February 7, 2009

By CHRIS STEVENSON, SUN MEDIA

Jason Spezza figures it's time for a change.

After scoring on three of his first four opportunities in the shootout earlier this season, the Senators centre has missed his last two attempts, including a shot into the glove of Boston Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas in Thursday night's 4-3 loss.

"Players only have so many moves in their toolbox and I think the (scoring) percentages are going down," said Spezza. "You've got to have a couple of moves in your arsenal and change it up."

Sens shootout woes grow

What was your first clue? Of course I'm a Leaf fan.

Maybe you're not connecting the current Sens to the Sens of old, but you're not paying attention if you think many others aren't.

Also, your deluding yourself if you don't recognize that the Maple Leafs are one of the most successful franchises not just in hockey, but in all of sport.

Hmmm - past successes of the Sens. That and a couple of quarters will buy you a cup of coffee.

LOL

Hmm "Jake" you must be a Leaf fan. We do not "connect" ourselves to the 1900's when talking about our successful past, tard, we are talking about the playoff streak, the run to the finals, the presidents trophy, etc. When talking about "storied past" look no further then you Leaf fans….haven't won anything in over 40years, but all you can talk about is the second most Stanley Cups, oh and your fail safe…..that for some reason you still think is funny….Oh lets see if Ottawa can beat us in the playoffs. So put your rose coloured glasses back on and take a hike.
Tyler, 2009-01-07 12:21:30

Well, you can't win 'em every year. this is not their year, but they are my team, my town. Look, the Toronto leafs sucked for years and the city fans were still behind them. doesn't matter...you cheer on your favourite team and hope they do good.

The Sens had their boom and now it's bust time.

A lack of Defense, some overpriced talent and maybe coaching problems.

They've won their share of conferences, divisions and even the east finals so the past 10 years wasn't exactly a bust.
Trev, 2009-01-07 10:12:57

The common denominator the last few years has been Murray, not Hartsburg...but guess who'll get the axe again...the coach.
Alex R, 2009-01-07 10:11:11

Nothing is wrong with the Sens, I like them just the way they are.

On a serious note, they gave away Corvo, Preissing and let Chara and most recently Redden go for nothing. This team reminds me of the Leafs when they began to slide into oblivion. It is pretty amusing that a Stanley Cup finalist team two years ago is now the biggest joke in the league. The Leafs are supposed to be as bad as they are but to still be ahead of the Sens is astounding. Don't worry Sens fans, they will be completing on the golf course in short order.

Maybe the team isnt paying the players enough? Look at poor Ruutu, he cant even afford to eat and has resorted to cannibalism.
Mike, 2009-01-07 06:42:03

Now Ruutu the rat has resorted to biting opponents - Peters of Buffalo in the game tonight. It's now clear that the Sens organization is completely without class.

You make a good point "someone" - Sens fans and the organization like to make reference to their long history and storied past by connecting the current collection of idiots to the Senators of the early 1900's. That is until anyone suggests a very long Stanley Cup drought for them as a result.
Jake, 2009-01-07 00:18:53

They've lost too many key defencemen (veterans and prospects), good coaches and never have had a starting goalie. Beyond their top line forward, they also have no depth. Lot's of work needed to bring them back to being a contender....
Ian from Niagara Falls, 2009-01-06 23:07:53

Vandwemke the Sens haven't won anything important since the 1920's. They continued that failure since they joined the league again. It may be 41 years for the Leafs, but it is close to 80 years for the Sens.
