What's wrong with the Senators?
Sat, February 7, 2009

By CHRIS STEVENSON, SUN MEDIA

Jason Spezza figures it's time for a change.

After scoring on three of his first four opportunities in the shootout earlier this season, the Senators centre has missed his last two attempts, including a shot into the glove of Boston Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas in Thursday night's 4-3 loss.

"Players only have so many moves in their toolbox and I think the (scoring) percentages are going down," said Spezza. "You've got to have a couple of moves in your arsenal and change it up."

Sens shootout woes grow

Peter, re "outside Ottawa, nobody really cares about Ottawa." how about sharing the results of your survey with the rest of us! I mean, I assume you ran a survey. How else could you make a statement like that?

Frankie, you missed your calling. You could have been a "hack" comedian. The best team over the last 10 years not to win a cup, lol, that's a good one. The Sens got rid of all their puck moving defenseman and got nothing in return. The Sens have a lot of money tied up in soft players and this team is destined for the bottom of the barrel. Yes, the Leafs have had their share of futility but the league never had to change the draft because they purposely tanked a season.

Rick W and Frank,

i think you forget that outside Ottawa, nobody really cares about Ottawa. and if you think Leafs fans are in denial, then you should take another look of Ottawa fans. you guys beleiev that the Sens some kind of an elite team, while they were seriously flawed, even when they made it out of the second round for the first time! the high scorind of the first line masked all the deffensive and secondary scoring problems they had, and when that line went south the whole team just fell apart. they are trying to emulate the Tampa model, and that's just not working. since they tied their hands with the stupid money they pay for a couple of the guys on the team, there won't be any quick turn-around, you can keep dreaming.

Frank

You forget that the only metric the Leaf fans, who are mostly in denial, have to help them sleep at nights is "at least we beat the Sens a few times". My theory is that the Sens were a much superior team that beat themselves, but Leaf fans won't agree. But hey, most of them don't realize that since the last Cup, only one Leaf has won a major trophy and that was their whipping boy Mogilny who only won the Lady Byng. I guess by talking about how much the Sens suck they can avoid for a few moments the hovering mass of futility over their heads.

The Sens run is now over, but they might be the best team over the past 10 years not to win a cup.

Let's face it, the Senators suck. Alfredson is not a leader, period. Spezza is a good time boy, when the team is doing well, Spezza does well. He doesn't have the heart to put the team on his shoulders when they need it. Heatly is a heart and soul guy, but not good enough by himself. I don't think there is a problem with Murray and Hartsburg. Blow up the damn team, they are underachievers. Maybe Ray Emery wasn't the problem after all, maybe the team just sucked.

your stats are wrong re shooting pctg leaders Where is Kyle Wellwood? 14 goals on 50 shots

Also how come the face off win / lost % stat is not available on your lists. I know the teams track it religiously

If the people in charge of the Ottawa Senators, and the so-called "media experts" haven't been able to figure out what's wrong with this team, then..how should I know !

However...i will say this..Everyone knows of Melnyk's involvement with his team, which is great , as far as an owner goes.

Having said that..is he the George Steinbrenner type ? By that I mean..is he interfering with his hockey people a bit too much ?

I remember last summer, when there were reports of Murray hiring DeBoer, only to find out a few days later that, after meeting with Mr. Melnyk in Florida, DeBoer was tossed , and Hartsburg was signed the very next day.

Now ! My question is..If it's true, that he had a big part in deciding who was the best fit to coach his team, then...what other role did he have in other decisions made by Murray ?

I look at Murray's track record, and i'm a bit confused at some of the moves he has made.

Ger'bage', Fisher, Phillips and Vermette are all relatively useless and not performing... At least the big 3 (Spezza, Alfie, Heatly) are getting some points and pucks in the net...I was completely baffled when Phillips actually scored against Boston friday night...This team needs a Mark Streit or Dion Phaneuf type defencemen and another forward who has a good game both ways. Love the idea of bringing Elliot up to see what he can do.

Perhaps Ottawa should just bomb this season so they can get an early draft pick this summer. I'd hate to see Tavares go to the Islanders haha.
Errk, 2009-01-09 17:28:24

A few bad signings have piled up against them.

Spezza, Fisher and probably Gerber for way too much. 1/2 their price would have been appropriate.

They need to try to build around the components that are solid but the money is mostly gone.
Trev, 2009-01-09 12:37:29

Big missteps from John Muckler (letting Chara go, getting guys like Peter Bondra at the trade deadline) right on through Murray, who says he's been looking for a defenceman for years but never gets one. Meanwhile the D-men who could move the puck are gone. Also asking Fisher and Vermette to do too much (they'd be part of an awesome 3rd line if only the Sens had a 2nd), and yes, signing Gerber to a 3-year deal. Auld is trying his best under the circumstances.

They won't make the playoffs this year, which sucks for Alfie - the guy is fading and deserves a real shot at the Cup.

I say Melnyk should meet with Murray and Hartsburg and determine what their plan is at the trade deadline and in the off-season. If it doesn't sound good and doesn't jibe with what ownership and the board agree to, fire them now. If it sounds doable and in alignment with the overall plan, keep them and let them do their work in the offseason (one more year).

Vancouver showed that you can make unconventional moves work, take a page from that book.
