What's wrong with the Senators?
Sat, February 7, 2009

By CHRIS STEVENSON, SUN MEDIA

Jason Spezza figures it's time for a change.

After scoring on three of his first four opportunities in the shootout earlier this season, the Senators centre has missed his last two attempts, including a shot into the glove of Boston Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas in Thursday night's 4-3 loss.

"Players only have so many moves in their toolbox and I think the (scoring) percentages are going down," said Spezza. "You've got to have a couple of moves in your arsenal and change it up."

Sens shootout woes grow

Defense is slow and panics. Philips is playing bad. Teams are forchecking us to oblivion, and we dont barely hit them when its our turn to try. Spezza has always been overated and I've been calling for him to be traded for 3 yrs now. DO IT! Spezza is unable to play without Heatly/Alfie, he showed that when they were hurt...he couldnt do anything. Heatly/Alfie can play great without Spezza. Trade him now for a good puck moving defenseman for pete's sake!!

I really think they should bring back Alexei Yashin from the dead, I'm sure he must be running low on cash by now and might play well his first year back to impress management so that Ottawa would offer him another huge contact again the following year. Then he could retire again after he shafts Ottawa a second time

Easy their a lacrosse team plying in the NHL

What we have here is a failure to communicate, the same old GM's and the same old coaches recycling themselves throughout the leaque over and over again, they continue to sign players for huge contracts that can never live up to expectations. Theirs big trouble coming for the NHL in terms of revenue and it's just beginning. Ottawa's problems are in the front office and have been for a long time, clean up there own act before they point a finger at the players and let the players play, they the players can take care of it themselves, they don't need this Old boys club pointing fingers because their in lies the problem.

NOTHING. They got Nothing. That's what's wrong with them. NOTHING!!

I am a leafs fan but would say this there is still only a handful of points from 1st to last place and it is far too early to be panicking yet.

They have better goal tending but the defence is still lacking and not working as one. The loss to Montreal is nothing. They beat us 6-3 and then we returned the compliment so what does that prove. The Canadiens have yet to show they have what it takes yet too.

Go Sens, Habs, Leafs and lets have some excitement back in the Eastern side of Canada this year.

They'll never be better than a middling team with so much of their cap space chewed up by Heatley and Spezza; 2 lazy, one dimensional floaters.
Steve, 2008-11-12 20:36:52

I guess Emery wasn't their problem after all eh? He was the scapegoat, and those their lack of heart is shining through.
Glen, 2008-11-12 20:17:35

If you look at the goals for and against in the NHL the Sens are running middle of the pack, not great but not all that bad.

I think it's time to put Alfie, Heatly, and Spessa back together, sume offence is better then none. It's up to the other lines to pick it up. As far as defence and goaltending they will develope as they go, except for Picard he is clearly not ready for this leage yet.
Dave, 2008-11-12 15:39:15

Their defence is causing more than enough problems for them. Maybe they, the forwards, are so intent on trying to back up their week defence that they can not play both ends of the rink. Also, might just be some of the prima donas in Ottawa do not like Hartsburg telling them what to do and calling them out! Don't forget Spezza put on a pout in Mississauga until they traded him? Frustrated also.
