What's wrong with the Senators?
Sat, February 7, 2009

By CHRIS STEVENSON, SUN MEDIA

Jason Spezza figures it's time for a change.

After scoring on three of his first four opportunities in the shootout earlier this season, the Senators centre has missed his last two attempts, including a shot into the glove of Boston Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas in Thursday night's 4-3 loss.

"Players only have so many moves in their toolbox and I think the (scoring) percentages are going down," said Spezza. "You've got to have a couple of moves in your arsenal and change it up."

Sens shootout woes grow

Their goaltending is unreliable, their defense is average and their forwards are good defensively but only three guys can score. Their problem seems to be in motivating the players. Redden was not that motivated last year, not sure why because it was a contract year, and Spezza is not now. Even Heatley can do way better than he has the last two years. Only Alfie shows up day in and out.

Maybe the cupboards are bare, but if they have other prospects worth playing I'd start bringing them in and let someone who wants the icetime play. It's only wishful thinking under the cap that they might recreate the magic of when they took a problem (Yashin) and turned it into a plus (Chara and Spezza). Sundin would help but I don't know if they can afford him. An extremely improbably occurence but if they could get Yashin for less than $1.5M, maybe he'd be willing to come back to his old digs to get his foot in the NHL waters again? He had some good years here and maybe he's learned a lesson or two? Make his contract bonus based and make him earn his money. It'll never happen though.

Senators Problems

(Warning to all this is my opinion only)

1/ Murray is not that great of a GM, he is better behind the bench.

2/ Three coaches in three years, spells no consitency

3/ Spezza is overrated, without Alfie and Heater he is not that great of a player.

4/ You are going to win some and lose some, it is only fifteen games into the season, it is the finish line that counts, but with the internal frustration level building they won't reach the finish line.

5/ There is no way this team will win a cup this year, and their team is not as good as last year.

On the bright side Alfie, is a stand up guy, one of the best players in the league and the only player in the league that stays where he is because he likes the team/city not because they are the highest bidder.

So is it time to panic, not really, Ottawa is not going to get too far in the playoffs (if they make it) anyway.

Simply put, this team will not make the playoffs. It doesn't have the talent. Back in Feb 2008 when they were still 1st in the East, I predicted they would finish 7th or even out of the playoffs altogether...if you remember, they came within one loss of being out (if Carolina had won, Ottawa would have been out). I saw what I am seeing now. A team without the mindset to win. Plain and simple.

What's going on in Ottawa?

The Sens are sucking, that's what.
Mr. Corvo, 2008-11-13 13:04:36

To all Ottawa fans that are jumping off. Good. We do not need you as fans. When are you all going to give a good coach a chance???he needs more then 15 games to change a system. And to the idiot that said Murray isn't a good GM....He built the team that beat us in the finals and built the team in Florida out of nothing. When can you all stop blaming everyone on the team and blame yourself. YOU are the cause of all the ridiculous media coverage and minor things blown out of proportion (ie. Players fighting in practice…happens all the time). So why don’t you all jump shit and join the Leafs….lost to complain about…like ownership not wanting to win a Cup because the seats will be full regardless. Just be happy that we have stable ownership, willing to spend to the max to win for the city. Whenever the parade happens I hope people like Mike, Carl, Ben, etc are not around to help the rest of us celebrate. Stop complaining and cheer for your team.

This team lacks chemistry. They didn't have it going into the playoffs last year and they certainly don't have it now. Having 3 coaches in as many years doesn't help either.
BOBEvans, 2008-11-13 12:25:21

Nothing new is what's going on...alot of teams are struggling...it's all about trying to build a better team each year...that's all...Hopefully Sens will do better this year.
gerry, 2008-11-13 11:15:17

This is what happens when an insightless owner fires a knowledgeable hockey man(Muckler) and replaces him with a guy like Murray, who is not a GM but a coach and doesn't know what he is doing.
Carl, 2008-11-13 10:54:44

Their problem is greed. Ottawa had an excellent core with Redden and Chara (let's forget about Yashin for now). But like most good players, they left for more money. Alfie is an example unto the rest of the league: It's not about money, it's about heart and soul.

Remember when Ottawa could roll out 4 scoring lines? Now they're trying to get one. That's just sad.
evilJaze, 2008-11-13 10:34:06

Its pretty simple. Bryan Murray has assembled the lamest bunch we've had in 10+ years. No D, no team speed, lacking work ethic, questionable coach, Spezza, etc. So many problems. These guys will be lucky if they can finish between 7-10. I predict 12th.
