What's wrong with the Senators?
Sat, February 7, 2009

By CHRIS STEVENSON, SUN MEDIA

Jason Spezza figures it's time for a change.

After scoring on three of his first four opportunities in the shootout earlier this season, the Senators centre has missed his last two attempts, including a shot into the glove of Boston Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas in Thursday night's 4-3 loss.

"Players only have so many moves in their toolbox and I think the (scoring) percentages are going down," said Spezza. "You've got to have a couple of moves in your arsenal and change it up."

Sens shootout woes grow

Gord.

You seem to carry around all the ingredients necessary to make your own "special" soup,so if you think this post is a waste of your time,GET LOST and start cooking.

As far as the sens go...someone's gonna have to go.Too may holes to fill,no cap space left.Spezza seems like the logical choice, since his no trade clause doesn't kick-in until he end of this year That would give Murray $7 Mills to play with. From what i've seem so far this year,I wouldn't be surprise if Vermette would go as well.

It's the Sweedish captains, look what happened to Matt's, Marcus and now Daniel, have a little success and it goes to thier head's. None of them have ever won a cup, can't set an example for the rest of the team. Whats wrong with a kid from west wearing the C, Wendle C and Doug M set the tone when they were in charge.

whats wrong with the senators --nothing..you can"t make chicken soup from chicken sh..t and until you people realize that you will continue to arm chair quarterback a situation that is not worth the time of day.

Of course it is time for the Sens to panic!! It has been since the melt down from last season that almost seen them NOT get into the playoffs. I agree with (Gary O) that Spezza is a one way give away artist. If they have any sense left they will try to trade him to chicago for khabibulin if he still wants out of there!! If that doesnt work then stick his overpaid ass in the minors for a month and teach him what hard work and "actual hockey sense" is. Other then that it comes back down to structure and team chemistry.

Muckler, for the most part, had done a good job building this team (Gerber aside). In comes Murray, with his new "gritty" style, which he felt was missing from his players, when the Ducks won the cup. Paddock tried to implement this "new system",wheels start falling-off, Murray brings in different players...more wheels fall-off.No better with Murray back behind the bench, nor with Hartsburg.

Problem is not with the players under-performing.It's that the "system" management is trying to impose on this team,is plainly not working with this core of players.

They either change their system or...trade their core of players, namely Heatley & Spezza.

With the salary cap in place....good luck on that !

3-1 loss to the Islanders tonight - Yikes!!!

If it's not time to panic, it soon will be.

The Bolts found out in recent years - 3 star forwards alone is not a winning strategy. Good thing the three stars for the Sens are all locked up for the long term :-)

Alfie is very skilled and works hard (he's the one bright light), but Heatley and Spezza are floaters always looking for the feed that doesn't come anymore - no cap room for a decent supporting cast.

Andy V., I bet you aren't hearing much Na Na, Hey Hey, Kiss Him Goodbye in the air tonight around Monreal - or anywhere else that Habs fans gather.

But I agree. The Sens are a classic collection of overpaid stiffs that severely limits Murray's power to improve. Then again, it was he who paid top sniper money to a grinder who generally can't locate the ocean from the end of the pier (Fisher), and gross money to a one-way giveaway artist (Spezza) who, despite the fact his no-trade doesn't kick in until next summer, becomes increasingly more difficult to deal with each passing day. If they go on to lose tonight to the Islanders - currently without a bunch of their top players including their goalie - out of the lineup, look for Melnyk to do something drastic. Like canning Murray for starters. His thumb must be permanently brown from having had it stuck where a proctologist does his best work for the past two years.

Ok, let's get real here.

The Sens are not what they once were, and the Habs after 2 crappy games, Carbonneau blasting them and skating them for 75 minutes: were not on the ice to lose.

They played an almost a perfect game.

It's way too early in the season to panic, but there are signs that the Sens are going to have it tough this year.

Alfie, Heatley and Spezza

are the big guns. Separate them and the big guns become

easier to deal with.

The Sens have some young guys that look pretty good in Winchester and Foligno but it's going to take time for them to become consistent.

Defence once the strength of the team under Jacques Martin, is only average.

Goaltending again is going to be a problem. Auld would have to play way above what he's shown with his past teams if he is to be a consistent # 1 goalie.

Gerber - baby food - need I say more ?

I'm wondering about Spezza and Hartsburg - is this a good combo ? Time will tell.

The Sens are a middle of the pack team. They could move up if Murray scores a #1 goalie and the Sens buy into a more defensive style to help the defence.

Good Luck!!!

GO HABS GO !!!
Andy V., 2008-11-13 18:26:14

Their problem is the same each and every game. They completely crumble if the opposition score first. Once they go down 1-0 they become the best team in the NHL to stand around and watch the puck. You can't blame this on one player, the coach, not even Ray Emery! The whole system is to blame, and Brian Murray better realize it sooner rather than later.
