What's wrong with the Senators?
Sat, February 7, 2009

By CHRIS STEVENSON, SUN MEDIA

Jason Spezza figures it's time for a change.

After scoring on three of his first four opportunities in the shootout earlier this season, the Senators centre has missed his last two attempts, including a shot into the glove of Boston Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas in Thursday night's 4-3 loss.

"Players only have so many moves in their toolbox and I think the (scoring) percentages are going down," said Spezza. "You've got to have a couple of moves in your arsenal and change it up."

Sens shootout woes grow

What's wrong with the Senators? What ISN'T wrong with the Senators. Pretty much goal tending, that's about it. It's time we ship out perennial under-achievers like Vermette (2G) and Kelly (1G)... although not that that's going to make a huge difference. I don't see why guys on the farm can't come up (ahem, Cody Bass), make the league minimum, and do as much as these 2 clowns, especially Kelly who brings absolutely nothing. My buddy said it pretty good the other day...Our skill guys don't have grit and our grit guys have absolutely no skill. And then there's guy's like Kelly and Vermette, who bring nothing at all. Fisher and Spezza can go too. Lets learn from the Leafs and start rebuilding, NOW.

The Sens should never have changed anything last year when they made the Cup. You make it to the Cup, don't change anything cause you're damn good. Well, ottawa changed things so they have no one to blame but themselves. Auld is holding everything together from Ottawa be last overall. we're almost a third through the season and things haven't been coming together. at this rate forget about the playoffs. I think Redden made a good choice from where he came from to where he went. Same for Hossa. ONly chance for ottawa now is to sit down at Xmas and think what matters to them most and fix it...otherwise come the month of january you;ll know if they will be playing in the playoffs.

I said it before the season began, and I will say it again. This team does not have the talent and/or grit to make the playoffs. The less talented Maple Leafs have a better shot at it. Why? They are playing as a team...albeit a woeful one.

Perhaps the Sens strategy is to get a chance at Tavares in the 1st round?

Ottawa needed to dominate both games - and did not. There is no fixing this bunch. They are going to have to ride out their big contracts (Spezza, Heatley, Fisher) and can expect to get next to nothing back in trades for anyone else. Just a mediocre team at best.

Now the Murray watch is in full swing. I can't see Melnyk sitting back waiting for the crowds to start to drop off.

And this would have nothing to do with "poor fan support." When players are being paid this kind of cash -and in tough economic times especially - the fans should EXPECT, if nothing else, then at least a 60-minute total effort. If not, the only way to demonstrate your displeasure is to remove your ass from the seat.

Only in The Centre Of The Hockey Universe are they stupid enough to flock to the rink regardless (and to vote Liberal, generally speaking).

Murray's job is safe BUT if thing's don't turn around soon you can expect some major trades.

If they lose to the Leafs tonight and/or the game on the Island Saturday then llok for Murray's head to roll. Either that or he'll be under orders to start dumping some of that high-priced waste material.

Oops! My previous message had Mike Fisher on the wrong line.

The #1 Line for the Senators of course consists of, Daniel Alfredsson, Jason Spezza, and Dany Heatly.

There are many things wrong with the Senators. Some of them are the following

The coach has found out what all his predecessors learned. Breaking up his only scoring line of Daniel Alfredsson, Jason Spezza, and Dany Heatly has resulted in less goals being scored and thus less wins. He cannot break them up again. This line has chemistry together, and the team scoring falls apart when they are separated. That is reality. Boy, did the Senators really miss the overrated and underachievers, Mike Fisher and Chris Neil in the win against the Rangers. Therein lays the problem. Underachievers are overrated on this Ottawa team. Heck, the fourth line with Cody Bass plays better than the second line with Fisher. Second line scoring has always been absent and continues to be so.

Craig Hartsburg hopefully will realize that he will be committing suicide by breaking up Daniel Alfredsson, Jason Spezza, and Dany Heatly.

If the second line is not scoring, break them up and switch them with the third or fourth line, or give them less playing time, but leave the #1 line intact! They are scoring! You don’t fix what works.

Paul: Ridiculous! Paddock, Murray, and Hartsburg..... exact same results. Obviously no coach can win with this group. Do not blame the coach when it is completely obvious that it is the players.
gordon, 2008-11-21 16:03:12

The problem with the Sens is the coach. His coaching style is from the dark ages. When he criticizes his players day in and day out in the media, what incentive do the players have to play well for him? He would be wise to do this in the dressing room and not in the media. Enough said.

Paul.
