What's wrong with the Senators?
Sat, February 7, 2009

By CHRIS STEVENSON, SUN MEDIA

Jason Spezza figures it's time for a change.

After scoring on three of his first four opportunities in the shootout earlier this season, the Senators centre has missed his last two attempts, including a shot into the glove of Boston Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas in Thursday night's 4-3 loss.

"Players only have so many moves in their toolbox and I think the (scoring) percentages are going down," said Spezza. "You've got to have a couple of moves in your arsenal and change it up."

Sens shootout woes grow

Jake, can't argue with your observations. Right now the Sens are a joke, but although I'm no fan of Murray as the GM, it wasn't he that signed Gerber long-term - it was Muckler.

That being said, he did ham-string them with those lengthy expensive contracts to Spezza and Heatly, making them both virtually unmoveable at the moment. However, if Heatly were to waive his no-trade clause I'm sure they might find a taker at the trade deadline. Not so for Spezza or Fisher. Even though Spezza's no-trade doesn't click in until July, he's not going anywhere for the simple reason that no one will want his long-term $7 mil per contract with the possibility of a reduced cap in the offing and tough economic times at hand. Fisher could waive his no-trade from the top of the Peace Tower and still no one would him. Not at $4.5 mil per. He is, at best, a 1.5 mil 4th line plugger. Kelly is useless as trade bait. as are Donovan, McAmmond, Foligno, Smith, Bass, Zubov, and Gerber. Their best trade commodity is Volchenkov, followed by Phillips (IF he waives his no-trade deal), maybe Kuba, Ruutu, Lee, and Picard - but the last 4 wouldn't get much in return.

I think Murray and Hatsburg will be gone once this road trip is over and Quinn handed the dual role of GM/coach for the rest of the year. Even then, they are doomed to bottom 5 - which, in the long run, may turn out to be the best thing to happen to them if they can get into the Tavares lottery (or that big Swede).

However, unlike Leaf fans who are faithful to a fault, Sens fans will show their displeasure by keeping their asses out of the seats until they perceive some positive moves on Melnyk's part. Talk isn't enough any longer.

The Sens can't win games anymore so they've lowered themselves to sending out pitbull/goon Neil to start a fight whenever they're down and out in a game - a regular occurence now. The Canucks game last night was the latest example - good show Chris!

Very classy!!!

Where are those comparisons to the '76 Habs that were going around in the early part of last season - this team's a bad joke. Murray's time has come and gone (e.g. worst moves - choosing Redden over Chara and now Redden's gone too, signing Gerber, long-term significant deals for a couple of soft snipers in Heatley and Spezza thereby eating up a lot of cap space, etc.).

Look on the bright side - Sens fans have the Canadian Juniors to watch and admire for another week or so.

This 8 game road trip will prove to be disastrous. They're road kill. Most of the Sens problems are no second line scoring, Fisher Vermette and Kelly, and no puck moving Defencemen.

Also, they are not physical around the net at either end of the ice. They are too soft in front of the Goaltenders at both ends of the rink.

Johnny Tortorella was the right guy to hire. At least he won a Stanley Cup as a coach.

The problem is that Ottawa doesn't really have much in it's minor league system.

The only thing to do is to trade some players like Spezza, Vermette, Fisher and Kuba (their tradeable assets) and get younger with picks and prospects for the future.

They're not going anywhere except DOWN, so they might as well partially rebuild.

Seems like they have a goalie in Auld that's doing well and he's not that old.

If you're going to spend a healthy % of your cap on 5 players you had better have a supporting cast that can locate the ocean from the end of a pier, ir be able to stop something sugnificantly smaller than a beach ball!

Tampa and Ottawa currently have 43% and 47% of their cap tied up in 5 players each, The management of neither team spent wisely as none among St. Louis ($5,250,000), Malone ($4,500,000), or Meszaros ($4,000,000) for Tampa and Spezza ($7,000,000), Fisher ($4,000,000) and Gerber ($3,725,000) are providing results commensurate with what they're making.

Nor are the supporting casts in the same league as the teams near the top. In both cases it's a formula for failure.

The Senators have one first line, and 3 fourth lines. The GM, Brian Murray, has got to trade some of his "CORE" second and third line players, and bring up some players from the minors. It's now apparent that new and young blood must be injected onto the team. The present day NHL is a Power play dominated game that requires high scoring power play defencemen. The Senators gave away all of theirs. Montreal Canadiens have the same problem with the power play this year. They gave away high scoring Mark Streit and Sheldon Sourray and now have problems scoring on the power play.
Vince in Ottawa, 2008-12-13 03:30:58

Well, anyway, I got the number of goals correct.
Gary O., 2008-12-03 22:02:58

Thrashers 4 Sens 2 tonight.
Gary O., 2008-12-03 11:53:26

The Sen's need a Captain with Heart and the Courage to lead.
