What's wrong with the Senators?
Sat, February 7, 2009

By CHRIS STEVENSON, SUN MEDIA

Jason Spezza figures it's time for a change.

After scoring on three of his first four opportunities in the shootout earlier this season, the Senators centre has missed his last two attempts, including a shot into the glove of Boston Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas in Thursday night's 4-3 loss.

"Players only have so many moves in their toolbox and I think the (scoring) percentages are going down," said Spezza. "You've got to have a couple of moves in your arsenal and change it up."

Sens shootout woes grow

Jon, you make your point ok - but the second you add in the HA HA's and such-and-such "sucks" you betray your juvenile tendencies. Why insist on throwing those banal idiotic comments into every post? Is ridiculing your habitual way of arguing a point?

It's not the coaching, and though I'm not a Bryan Murray fan it's not the GM. It's the players! People have been saying for years that the Sens have no heart and it's still true. A little adversity and this team folds up like an accordion. Chris Neil is the only Sens player who consistently answers the bell night after night.

Sens fans don't help either, the chew up and spit out goalies like they are cheap wings at happy hour, one bad game and who ever is goalie knows he's toast on this team.

They had one of the best puck moving defencemen in the league, but he has an off year and what happens? He's literally run out of town.

The current crop off players look like they are playing scared and they should be because they know they could be the next sacrificial lamb.

The gas tanks on empty, tires are bald, leaking oil all over the place, blowing smoke out the tail end and tuned into the wrong station.

Let's compare two Franchises:

The Pittsburgh Steelers have the best ownership in Pro sports and have had 3 - coaches in 40-years. The Sens have a clown as an owner (ala Jerry Jones/Snyder) and have had 3 coaches in 10-months.

The team went downhill when they traded Havlat (who could have returned allot at that time) but instead got nothing.

Mistake #2, deciding to keep Redden over Chara. Heatley is a "pure-floater", Spezza is untradeable with his contract and since he has no t*sticles, which leaves Alfredsson - their only good player but also, the only player who could get them something useful in a trade.

It always starts at the top and I have no sympathy for teams with clowns as their owner. Sorry for the fans.

It seems to me that Spezza and co. are all mouth and no action. Blow up the team while you can get something to build with. The ones now have no guts.

Time to make some big trades and get what this team is missing: goaltending, defence, and some heart.

Jon

Since Gary and I both corrected your assumption and you've chosen to ignore reality, I can only chalk it up to a habitual denial of what's right in front of you, brought on by too many years of dreaming your team had a chance. Not that I care, but I'm betting your Leafs still finish behind the Sens this year.

Now that I've done what I've accused you and your ilk of doing, bringing the Leafs into this, back to the Sens. The coaching change can't hurt but one thing that bugs me about the Sens is their need to find a scapegoat. First Lalime, then Hasek, Emery, Gerber, Auld and Elliot are/were supposed to fix things, but each time it has been a step down (nothing against Elliot, he's just young). IMHO they would have won a cup if they had just stuck with Lalime (despite how he has played on other teams). Lalime has the lowest playoff goals against average of any goalie in the NHL, so his play was never the problem unless two bad games against the Leafs are everything.

HA HA Rick and Gary...it's funny to see when the Sens are doing badly how Ottawa fans turn into being Habs fans. I take it you are both from Ottawa or the Ottawa area and proably really cheer for the Sens when they are doing well (that is of course untill the Habs visit). All I am really trying to say is that I stick by my team through thick or thin, I am disappointed on how the Sens are playing right now. It has taken some of the fire out of the rivalry. If I was their owner I would get rid of Murray as he has destroyed this team, Hey even T.O. got it right when they got rid of JFJ.

Hey, it's a bad year. can't win 'em all. I do think it's time for the organization to go through the team with a fine tooth comb this time. They can't get any worse this year. and point taken, if the leafs (who sucked for decades) can be supported during all that time, then we cans support the Sens too. Better luck next year guys...this one is pretty much a right off.
gerry, 2009-02-03 10:35:19

Salary cap? I you couldn't win when you had Hossa Chara Redden and the injury prone guy who ended up in Ch1cago how can you win now. You paid most of your cap money to 3 guys and have little money or cap room left.Develop your young players trade off the deadwood and welcome to the "new" NHL...so every 3 or so years you'll have a player turnover..I think 10 + year contracts are ridiculous If you do that buy lots of insurance....and a goalie
