Does Toronto need another NHL team?
Fri, June 5, 2009

By TERRY KOSHAN, SUN MEDIA

A Toronto group wants to leave its Legacy with the National Hockey League.

Calling it a pie-in-the-sky idea might be a safer bet.

Andrew Lopez, creator of the Toronto Legacy Group, unveiled an ambitious NHL expansion team plan today at a downtown restaurant, one that would be called the Toronto Legacy, play in a proposed 30,000-seat arena at Downsview Park and give 25% of its annual net profits to charities across Canada.

Half of the tickets in the rink, which is part of a plan that would include an Olympic swimming pool, office towers and a hotel, would be sold for no more than $50 a game.

Lopez said the group already has lined up $1 billion in financing.

Do you think this bid, or any other bid, could bring a second NHL team to Toronto? Does the Greater Toronto Area need another team? Have your say in our forum.

Another team in T.O.?

I think Toronto should concentrate on trying to make one team competitive before failing with two.

I'd say no to a second team in Toronto. I would say yes to a team in K/W, Hamilton, London. Build a new area that isn't all corporate boxes. I enjoy going to other cities (Buffalo, Tampa, Montreal, Minessota) they have great venues and are all easier to get to than downtown Toronto.

Does Toronto have a hockey team?

I think an additional team in Southern Ontario would be GREAT.

I would suggest KW instead of Toronto.

Why do I say KW

1)As a hockey fan, I really dislike the 3 hour commute to a game, and the 1 ½ hour drive home, not to mention the attack on my pocket book to park and the outlandish food prices near the A.C.C..

2)Fan base would come from surrounding areas like London. Maybe some of those hockey fans will stop attending games in Detroit.

3)The fans hear can afford to attend regular games. Look at out Junior A games, almost always sold out. We love hockey

Seriously, though, expansion is terrible idea from the word 'go.' There's enough talent out there for 24 teams, and enough U.S. fans (for a gate-driven league) for a maximum of 17 U.S.-based teams. Expansion? Heck, no. Contraction? Heck yeah. Goodbye: Nashville, Atlanta, Florida, Phoenix, LA, NYI, Columbus. Hello Winnpeg and an exciting product on the ice of a 24-team league.

If I was a 'Pegger, I'd be so desparate for an NHL team that I'd even take the Leafs and then let the NHL put a team in Hogtown.

Does Toronto need two NHL teams? Don't think so. They've already got two AHL teams: one playing out of Ricoh and one playing out the ACC...

A second Toronto team would fall flat. This is a Leafs town, not a hockey town (just ask the Marlies / Majors / Battalion). Hamilton would strongly support a new team. So would K/W.
JoshJake, 2008-10-21 13:03:26

Toronto is not a hockey town. And it has not been one for a while. It is a Leaf town. No team would last in Toronto. They would get even worse attendance than they do in Nashville or Atlanta. Have you seen attendance at a Marlies game? Or an OHL game? Non-existant. Furthermore, people who do show up at Leaf games aren't even fans. Most have been given tickets by their corporate buddies and care less about the outcome of the game than Sundin did, if that is possible. That is why the crowds are so quiet. Go to a real hockey town like Detroit, Philadelphia or Montreal to see how a crowd should act. Put an expansion team in Winnipeg, Quebec or Portland. And move the Leafs there while you are at it.

I think they should put another team in Southern Ontario, hey maybe a good team for a change....
