Does Toronto need another NHL team?
Fri, June 5, 2009

By TERRY KOSHAN, SUN MEDIA

A Toronto group wants to leave its Legacy with the National Hockey League.

Calling it a pie-in-the-sky idea might be a safer bet.

Andrew Lopez, creator of the Toronto Legacy Group, unveiled an ambitious NHL expansion team plan today at a downtown restaurant, one that would be called the Toronto Legacy, play in a proposed 30,000-seat arena at Downsview Park and give 25% of its annual net profits to charities across Canada.

Half of the tickets in the rink, which is part of a plan that would include an Olympic swimming pool, office towers and a hotel, would be sold for no more than $50 a game.

Lopez said the group already has lined up $1 billion in financing.

Do you think this bid, or any other bid, could bring a second NHL team to Toronto? Does the Greater Toronto Area need another team? Have your say in our forum.

Another team in T.O.?

Sure why not give those corporate pigs more tickets to suck up. No of course not Toronto does not deserve more they deserve less.

Hell no. Fill a couple of other voids first.

And by a couple, I mean Winnipeg, Quebec, Halifax, Saskatoon, Victoria, Lethbridge, Moose Jaw, Brandon, Helsinki... you get the point

No way, give another location a shot where there is the population/Hockey fan base. The leafs are in shambles, a 2nd franchise team is not needed. Half of the ACC is corporate owned and it's impossible to get seats at realistic prices. No wonder people drive to Detroit/Buffalo to watch games and get decent seats. Listen to the fans, Hamilton or KW area would easily support another team. Just my $0.02

The best thing that could happen to the Leafs would be another team in Toronto. They wouldn't be guaranteed to sell out by just putting warm bodies on the ice, so ownership might actually try to build a competitive team.

If New York can carry two teams then Toronto could hold ten, so wise up and let another team in. It'd be nice if generations of Ontario kids weren't held hostage by an impotent team and actually had a choice.

Yes, Southern Ontario could support another NHL franchise - but not Toronto and not expansion. We don't need to water down the product with expansion. Moving an existing team from the US to Hamilton, K-W or Oshawa would make the most sense to me.

People keep saying, let's try to have one good team before bringing in another.

There'd be two different sets of management with different ways of building teams. I for one have never been to a game at the ACC because I don't have rich friends, don't work for a giant corporation high up, and have a mortgage. I've gone to lot's of Senators games because I can afford it and tickets are available, plus there's decent product on the ice. The Leafs aren't going anywhere. You can put a team of dancing monkeys on the ice, put Leaf jerseys on them, and the place will still sell out to the countless suckers. I say bring in a team, call them the Ajax Beavers or something and I'll be there with cash in hand to buy a ticket and support them. Leaf fans are like a dog that's been kicked daily, underfed, never brought inside, it keeps coming back for more abuse because they know of no other option. Put another master nearby and they'll jump ship. Leafs suck.

Is there a team in toronto now?
doug, 2008-10-21 15:02:28

Another? 1st you need an NHL team there to start before you can have "another", LOL. The Triple AAA Midgets called the Leafs are trying hard but not quite there yet. LOL face it TO Blows, maybe in a year or two when there is stability in the front office and get a Ted Nolan or Lindy Ruff type coach behind the bench.

Hey Garey, 2008-10-21 13:02:15

Well put! T.O needs another team like it needs a hole in the head. I might add that KW with surrounding area whould also support a team, but for God's sake don't move the Leafs there.

Do they have one now?
