Does Toronto need another NHL team?
Fri, June 5, 2009

By TERRY KOSHAN, SUN MEDIA

A Toronto group wants to leave its Legacy with the National Hockey League.

Calling it a pie-in-the-sky idea might be a safer bet.

Andrew Lopez, creator of the Toronto Legacy Group, unveiled an ambitious NHL expansion team plan today at a downtown restaurant, one that would be called the Toronto Legacy, play in a proposed 30,000-seat arena at Downsview Park and give 25% of its annual net profits to charities across Canada.

Half of the tickets in the rink, which is part of a plan that would include an Olympic swimming pool, office towers and a hotel, would be sold for no more than $50 a game.

Lopez said the group already has lined up $1 billion in financing.

Do you think this bid, or any other bid, could bring a second NHL team to Toronto? Does the Greater Toronto Area need another team? Have your say in our forum.

Another team in T.O.?

Yes, I would love another team here, if not in Hamilton, Mississauga, KW, Windsor. And aside from being the landlord at the ACC, keep MLSE and co. as far away as possible from it.

To all EDMONTON residents: this topic should be named "Should Edmonton get an NBA Franchise". You guys were terrific --- selling out entire arena for a pre-season game, and treating the Raptors like royalty before and during the game (cheering the closing minutes!) Now I know why the Oilers had all that success, with a sporting culture like that. YOU guys deserve more teams out there.

I'm thinking Toronto would rejoice if they had one NHL team.

Yes the jokes will come flying out, but seriously why not head back to Winnipeg...new arena, population has increased and out West is where the money is now. Plus they can take back the "white out" from the hijacking Phoenix fans. Quebec City would be great, but only if a new arena was part of the deal. Le Colisee just can't cut it as an NHL arena.

Hamilton would also be a great choice. Screw the Sabres...they've been clinging on the last few years.

Can't see a team flying on Canada'a East Coast...people too loyal to Habs, Leafs, Bruins, etc.

What a ridiculous idea for a discussion. Leaf bashers are coming out of the woodwork you numpty.

I'm sure there's more than a few Hamiltonians that are seething at the idea...

Toronto doesn't need another professional hockey team. It would only serve to confuse the media. We have two now, but only one (Leafs) gets any decent coverage. Are the Marlies in Newfoundland? What about the Majors? Coverage of any team other than the Leafs sucks!

Two baseball teams in Chicago - 2 in LA - 2 in NY - 3 hockey teams in NY???? It's WAYYYYY overdue, and the only way the Leafs will ever give a damn.

No I don't think that Toronto needs another team. They are happy going to see the laughs. The packed arena says it all. However Canada deserves a better team. For some reason or another someone labeled the laughs as canada's team. I suspect it has something to do with the maple leaf on their jersey. Maybe we should switch it to the Montreal atleast they are called Canadians.

Are there enough golf courses open in TO to have 2 NHL team booking tee times in early April.
jacques, 2008-10-22 01:30:20

Typical Toronto - I'd rather have Quebec City, Winnipeg or the East Coast have a team before Toronto get's another team.

Can Toronto afford another team yes, that's the problem.
