Does Toronto need another NHL team?
Fri, June 5, 2009

By TERRY KOSHAN, SUN MEDIA

A Toronto group wants to leave its Legacy with the National Hockey League.

Calling it a pie-in-the-sky idea might be a safer bet.

Andrew Lopez, creator of the Toronto Legacy Group, unveiled an ambitious NHL expansion team plan today at a downtown restaurant, one that would be called the Toronto Legacy, play in a proposed 30,000-seat arena at Downsview Park and give 25% of its annual net profits to charities across Canada.

Half of the tickets in the rink, which is part of a plan that would include an Olympic swimming pool, office towers and a hotel, would be sold for no more than $50 a game.

Lopez said the group already has lined up $1 billion in financing.

Do you think this bid, or any other bid, could bring a second NHL team to Toronto? Does the Greater Toronto Area need another team? Have your say in our forum.

Another team in T.O.?

Bettman will never give up trying to tap that American market. Bring teams back to Canada! I'd love to go to the Kitchener RimRockets games.

If Ontario were to get another team, it should be located right along the 401 where Cambridge and Kitchener meet, for the following reasons:

- There is land available there

- Cambridge, Kitchener and Waterloo have a combined population of over 450,000 people, almost all hockey fans, enough alone to support a team.

- Cities such as Guelph and London are less than 30 minutes away. Parts of Mississauga and Hamilton are almost as close.

- Toronto is only an hour away.

As for a name - I'd definitely call it the "Ontario (insert name here)" rather than using a city name,

I agree with K Lee,two teams in Toronto, the media coverage would drive us weterners even more crazy. As far as expansion if they want to water down the product even more, at least have Canada first in line for the next expansion team or relocating a team, enough with the States.......

Every hockey fan has two favorite teams: Their team and who ever is playing the leafs that night. Don't give them another team to hate.

What do you mean another team, they don't have one now.

Stewart S, 2008-10-22 16:05:53

Can they support another team, sure they can, its all about the bucks! They know people from Toronto will pay high prices for a loser team, just the facts! As for "A Canadian Team" the leafs fans arent even canadian fans to start with. When the Sen's played Anaheim a couple of years ago they not only cheered for the Ducks but knocked ottawa every chance they could. Now Montreal is another story, they supported our team when theirs was beat out, and guess what, we havent forgotton that! I have no respect for TO fans as they have no respect for other canadian teams, hats off to the Habs fans though, we will be there cheering for you guys! Another team in TO? WHO CARES, certainly not this part of Ontario!!

Sorry Jill, BC cannot support another team yet. With a population of 4.1 million that is less than the golden horseshoe/GTA and in the GTA that is a concentrated population in a relatively small area(compared to all of BC).

Another team in Toronto doesn't make much sense and Hamilton would be blocked by the Leafs and Sabres. However Kitchener/Waterloo as a regional Southern Ontario team could do quite well. I'd love to see teams back in Winnipeg and Quebec City as well but they'd need corporate $$$ to buy luxury boxes as well as a fan base with deep pockets.

It's all a moot point since this won't happen for a long time. The NHL needs to contract to around 24 teams to be financially feasible anyway

Does Toronto need another NHL team?

whoa...Toronto has a hockey team?
dogma, 2008-10-22 14:29:48

Yes ! It would be great ! What could be better then 2 Toronto teams that suck ?
Stu, 2008-10-22 13:52:29

Toronto doesn't deserve another team. They think they can have what they want because they have the corporate offices and dumb fans willing to pay.

Too bad Tronna the money is moving west and that is where new teams will go while the Laffs stay in the cellar
