Paul, the big difference between the Flyers and the Leafs is that Philly had a core of decent players to build around.

Toronto is rotten to the core.

Look at the Flyers 2 years ago. They were in the basement. Last year they were competing for the cup. Look at the difference a year makes.

There are no surprises so far in the pre-season. Schenn is playing better than the veteran "D" (time to trade him), Ponikarovsky is making everyone scratch their heads and wonder why he doesn't have a permanent spot on the Marlies, and there is not one forward that would be a top 6 on any other NHL team.

Management's hardest decision will be which 23 players warrant the big-league salaries.

Can't see this team competing for anything...not even 1st overall draft pick.

Agreed Billy. oooo i cant wait to see how the major laughs do this season...oh wait...they will be terrible...again...also agree with ward about teams playing as a unit doing big things, but this is not that team...way too much off-ice drama and a core of unproven players that cant handle it will doom this team...again...and again...feel bad for leaf fans...longest.rebuilding.period.ever...if mats is smart he wouldnt touch a TO comeback with a 100ft pole

I agree, Johnny, to a point. Aggressive fore- and back-checking from all four lines instilled by Wilson and good goaltending from Toskala will surprise teams here and there throughout the season who might figure it's an easy 2 points.

But it's hard to maintain that kind of energetic play over long stretches, and when the injuries start to occur (and most teams will go through that at some point) their lack of depth will hurt them badly.

Also, they don't look like a team that will be able to come back from early deficits as they simply don't have the talent to open up and take chances.

I see them, Carolina, Atlanta, and L.A. all jockeying for the # 1 draft position next June.

Good lord Johnny, are you serious? Playoffs? Even if they made it by some ridiculous miracle(and it would be), making the playoffs would be a terrible thing for them. Why? because yet again they will have screwed themselves out of a high draft spot to get knocked out in the first round. They may be younger and hungrier yes, but the talent pool is simply not there, and their farm system is dry. Wilson is a great coach, but even he is incapable of getting blood from a stone. Look at the players he had in San Jose as compared to Toronto. He has a huge challenge in front of him. You and the rest of Leafs Nation need to accept that rebuilding doesnt happen in one summer, particularily with a gutted and revamped team. Rebuilding takes years, so accept the losing with stoicism and wait for better days ahead.

It's funny that some staffer at Slam! thinks that the roster of the Leafs actually warrants a comment section. Look at the flood of messages that have come in about this! Even the disillusioned fans of LeafNation aren't commenting - nobody cares!!

I have watched talent-thin teams outplay star-studded teams in the past. Winning by committee, following a game plan and paying attention to detail can take a young enthusiastic team far. I am getting the sense that this year's Leafs may become that type of team. If they can compete with heart, win or lose, they will be easier to watch.
Ward, 2008-09-27 19:22:35

Plain and simple .. The Leafs suck and will not make the playoffs once again. No way they come anywhere close to Montreal, Penguins, Flyers, Ottawa, New Jersey.. doesn<t leave much room for playoff posibilities. In fact the admin has proven worst than the team.. lok at the results. Why the hell would Sundin even give a glane at coming back. Don't kid yourself you so-called Leaf Nation fans...at this rate our kids will not live long enough to see them win the cup.
