What are your thoughts on how the Leafs' roster is shaping up? Who should stay and who should go before the trade deadline? Have your say in our forum.

The signing of Gustavsson, Beauchemin, Exelby and Komasarik mark real progress. The roster has improved dramatically. Unlike so many recent acquisitions egs. Fingers, Joseph, Van Ryn, Blake etc. these four new additions have a real upside.

Keep Kaberle, dump Fingers and Toskala. Why Toskala? Vesa just isn't a 1st string goalie and he is too overpaid to be pushed into a back up role. As for Fingers, he prefers to poke check rather than be physical and that isn't the style of play that wins hockey games. White and Ponikarovsky are also expendable but cheap in the case of White and not exhorbitant in the case of Ponikarovsky.

Burke has earned his pay this week. Another week like this and I will have to stop Laffing at the Laffs!

Burke has made some moves that I like,to make the team tougher and more respectable. And he isn't done yet. They now have too many defensemen so one or two might have to go.They still need a quality forward or two. We'll likely have to put up with Blake's whining and sniveling for another year though. And the goalie situation isn't real clear either.Stay tuned...

I've refrained from commenting again until the 2009 draft was completed. Its beginning to look like Burke blabs, blusters and bafflegabs his way around just about all of the time. After the draft the Laffs roster for next year has not improved one iota.

Its amazing the way the TO scribes hang on Burke's every word "We're going after Tavares and little Schenn" he said. Nobody asked how when he clearly wasn't going to part with Schenn the Elder. Maybe now Burke realizes how few assets he has at his disposal, thanks of course to JFJ, Dave Morisson and Mike Penney.

His draft picks have been rated the best of any Cdn team. But at this point when not one draft pick has played an NHL game who is to tell what the future will hold?

For certain at this point the Laffs roster is horrible and Burke's addition of Brad May and 2 college kids is really not much progress. If he is trying for the first pick next year, not a bad strategy by the way, he is doing a fine job. That 7th pick is just not high enough to get a guaranteed winner.

Who's on it?
Fah Kinwright, 2009-06-16 12:23:19

Is the question what do I think of the Laffs' roster, say against Detroit or Pittsburgh? Or how do I think the top three forwards (Blake, Ponikarovsky and Stajan) snd the top two defencemen (Kaberle and Kubia) or the goalies (Toskala and Pogge) compare with the starting line-ups in the Eastern Conference?

My answer to that is I think the talent was absolutely drained out of the entire system as soon as JFJ arrived and efforts to date to turn things around are a long way from showing any results.

Burke has brought in Brad May and a couple of college kids. Its going to be real hard to build this roster around one good potential star defenceman (Schenn) and nothing else.

I can see the Laffs in the playoffs maybe in 2 years but building a team like Detroit's isn't going to happen with the likes of Dave Morrison and Mike Penny as Directors of Amateur and Pro Scouting calling out the names of the future Laffs.

.... and now, no matter who wins in the East, an ex-Leaf is going to be in the Stanley Cup finals. While those still in T.O. golf.

And by the way, as for Maurice being a subpar coach, when he took over the 'Canes they were 12-11-2, sitting in 8th, and had won just 4 of their previous ten. This was also a team that had missed the playoffs the previ8ous two years. He led what was obviously a subpar team to a 33-19-5 record the rest of the way and to where they are now: 7th game of a series against the top team in the Conference and in the 2nd round.

Using your logic gordholio, Wilson is also a subpar coach when coaching a subpar team (the Lefs had a better record last year under Maurice) and a good coach when coaching a good team (i.e., San Jose).

Pretty much applies to ALL coaches I would think.

Who's "we" Kemo Sabe? Here I thought you were a die-hard Oilers fan who took every opportunity to extol the virtues of that young team - read "young chokers."

I didn't say Toronto would want them back. Merely pointed out that each is probably happier to be where they are. Including Wellwood and Sundin who at least got to be part of a team that went 10 games deep into the playoffs. Something no Leaf has experienced in four years!

Paul Maurice is a good coach WHEN he has a good team. When he has a subpar team, he's a subpar coach.

Kyle Wellwood and Mats Sundin were disappointments in the playoffs. Wellwood was scratched quite a bit.

Hal Gill is on a good team in Pittsburgh, but he is a less than average and slow defenceman.

We wouldn't take ANY of them back in Toronto.

Look at it from this perspective. Right now Kyle Welwood and Mats Sundin are well-positioned to be on a cup winner (Sundin has a goal tonight so far and Wellwood 2 assists), Paul Maurice - the fired Paul Maurice - has his team in the second round. Hal Gil is a regular on the Pittsburgh D.

Do you think ANY of them would trade that to be back in Toronto?
