Should Bob Cole retire from broadcasting?
Wed, September 17, 2008

Harry Neale has not talked to Bob Cole in the past few days.

No matter.

Upon hearing rumblings that his long-time Hockey Night In Canada partner would be usurped by Jim Hughson as the No. 1 play-by-play man on Saturday nights for this upcoming season, Neale was not surprised.

He has, after all, seen this scenario play out before.

It happened exactly one year ago. And the man whose workload was cut was none other than Neale himself.

Do you think Cole's duties on HNIC will be reduced? Should he just retire from broadcasting altogether? Have your say in our forum.

Cole's role shrinking?

I can't stand any of the 'leaf' announcers. There all brutal.

Hughson is the best, and I wish he would have stayed on the late games.

Bob has been a great broadcaster and ambassador for the game. Unfortunately I think it's time for him to move into retirement. The game is now too fast and clearly he has trouble keeping up. I would like to see him participate in some kind of a between periods show however. I think he could add a lot with Ron McLain between second and third periods.

I'm not going to bash Bob Cole. The man has had a long and successful career. However, it is time for Bob to leave gracefully. He get's confused during games, loses sight of the puck and makes the wrong call consistently. I have alot of respect for what he has been able to accomplish in his career but I think it's time to move on.

I hope Jim Huson (sp) is not his replacement as reported earlier. We need some new blood. Someone with in depth hockey knowledge. Bring in a colourful ex NHL hockey player. Lord knows there are alot of them available.

100%

He was the best but the game has past him by.

This move is about 5yrs too late.

Bad choice of words.

theres a time for all good things to end, nothing against Bob Cole and nothing against the hockey night in Canada theme song, but sometimes its time for new blood, good luck too you Mr. Cole i hope your replacement loves hockey as much as you do, now its time for CBC and to take a look at Don Cherry i think his time is long come and gone. And i'm sooooo looking forward to the new HNIC theme!!!!

A couple of thoughts here:

Mr. Cole was and has been the voice of HNIC for as long as I can remember, but then again, the same could be said for the past anthem.

I think it is fair to say though, his broadcasts do not reflect the new NHL and style that is played. It seems like he cannot keep up to play at times or the who is actually making the play.

But I guess more directly, when HNIC broadcasts 2 games on a Saturday night, how does that make him the No.1 play by play man when he does not do both. All he does is Toronto games, guess some other Eastern games if the Leafs are not playing first. More than not I only see the second game so I'll be hard pressed to notice.

I will not miss him at all. All impartiality flew out the window with Cole and his blatant love of the Leafs. Every opposing netminder was "The Goalie", and every Leaf netminder made great saves on every shot. Before the bias and the growing insanity kicked in, he could inject excitement into a game, now he ruins games.
