Should Bob Cole retire from broadcasting?
Wed, September 17, 2008

Harry Neale has not talked to Bob Cole in the past few days.

No matter.

Upon hearing rumblings that his long-time Hockey Night In Canada partner would be usurped by Jim Hughson as the No. 1 play-by-play man on Saturday nights for this upcoming season, Neale was not surprised.

He has, after all, seen this scenario play out before.

It happened exactly one year ago. And the man whose workload was cut was none other than Neale himself.

Do you think Cole's duties on HNIC will be reduced? Should he just retire from broadcasting altogether? Have your say in our forum.

Cole's role shrinking?

Funny.

A few critical comments in Toronto media are written about Cole and he gets the boot. A mountain of critical articles on the Leafs nationwide and they get ... Finger! What possesses Leafs fans to sell out ACC for the next 10 years and blame their woes on people like Harold Ballard and Bob Cole? Its the Leafs fans that should be FIRED!

Bob Cole's play-by-play announcing was one of a number of reasons I stopped watching NHL games. As long as the camera operators followed the play, a viewer could easily determine what was happening. Bob Cole's non-stop motor-mouth descriptions of every bit of on-ice minutia and his need to give a psychological assessment of every player passing the puck proved to be a bit much for this former fan. Enjoy your retirement Mr. Cole.

This is long over due. He should be fired !!! He has blown so many calls, and spends half of the time rambling on to try and explain something even he knows makes no sense. I found myself watching the US feed for hockey games in the playoffs this year because I couldn't take it anymore. Maybe my dream of hearing Joe Bowen finally call Leafs games on HNIC is one step closer to reality.

is it time??? are you kidding?

NO it WAS time 5 years ago!!!

It's clear that his style of calling a game has come and gone. I welcome listening to Jim Hughson calling more HNIC games, maybe it will be the Best game involving a canadian team, which this year will rarely involve Toronto!

Bob Cole should have quit a long time ago. only CBC would hold on to a guy who can keep up to the play and does know half the players. Just listen to the difference between Jim H. and Cole. It is to bad when they let things go on long past thier prime. Get on with life.

While I have the greatest of respect for both Mr. Cole and Mr. Neale, I grew up in the 50s and 60s with the Deans of hockey broadcasting - Danny Gallivan, Foster Hewitt and Ted Darling. These gentlemen are unsurpassed. Unfortunately, there is no one of their calibre broadcasting today or on the horizon. Maybe the bar set by Gallivan and company is just too high. Pity.

He might be an icon in hockey broadcasting but as someone recently wrote "it's difficult to hear him through the shaking sounds of his blue and white pompoms". Hey Bob, there's two teams out there! Yes, I think his time has come.
Dave Bell, 2008-09-17 18:13:59

Absolutely not, unless Bob Cole wants to make that decision. A very recognizable, comforting, acurate commentator. I personally hope that he is not forced out, or reduced by CBC. A respectful way to handle it would be to consult Cole himself first, and respect and honor his answer.

NO WAY!!! You cannot get rid of Cole, he is HNIC...You guys already screwed up and lost the anthem, I guarantee you if you get rid of Cole then I will have no reason to watch CBCs HNIC, TSN will become my main NHL provider...

As for you morons who think he is biased, get a life...HE is not biased, it does not matter who is playing or who scores, he gets excited whenever a goal is scored or a great play is made...It makes for exciting play-by-play, which I would rather than if he was there speaking in a mono-tone...

So grow up all you sore SENS losers and stop blaming Cole for your losses...

If he's waiting for his beloved Leafs to return to glory, he might just as well retire. He'll be 106 before that happens.
