Should Bob Cole retire from broadcasting?
Wed, September 17, 2008

Harry Neale has not talked to Bob Cole in the past few days.

No matter.

Upon hearing rumblings that his long-time Hockey Night In Canada partner would be usurped by Jim Hughson as the No. 1 play-by-play man on Saturday nights for this upcoming season, Neale was not surprised.

He has, after all, seen this scenario play out before.

It happened exactly one year ago. And the man whose workload was cut was none other than Neale himself.

Do you think Cole's duties on HNIC will be reduced? Should he just retire from broadcasting altogether? Have your say in our forum.

Cole's role shrinking?

First the Hockey night in Canada song and now getting rid of Bob. I guess TSN will two up CBC. Cannot wait till CBC is private company because you can bet your house they will go under!

"... he's trying to fool Bourque..."

When he was on, he was the best. Now is the time, Bob.

Some of the harsh comments are a little off base. Cole was great even a couple years ago. I think CBC could do him a favour by putting him in a storyteller role like Irvin was for a while to bring back some nostalga to a show that is trying to become to American with guys like Stock mouthing nothing into a mic for 30 second pieces. Still, Cole was one of the best. I did a tribute speech to him my first year in university. PISANI SCORES!!! You cannot deny he has a place on HNIC somewhere, even it isn't play-by-play. Thanks!

As great as Bob Cole has been over the years, he seems to have trouble keeping up with the play. It might be best for him to gracefully set aside before he has to be forced out.

"Here they come.... all 5 of them !"

The question is not should Bob Cole retire, it should read why has'nt Bob cole retired a long time ago. One thing that always ruined saturday night in our house was watching the pathedic Leafs and listening to "Old Bob" try to convince me the Leafs are on the attack or back on thier heels. He was so paatahedic because he only knew a few stars from the visiting team and was so far behind the play they were already faceing off while Bob was digging the puck out of Toronto's net. Maybe the Leafs will actually get a few viewer fans now that Bob is off the air and Matt's is back in Sweeden doing what he does best, "nothing".

Jim Hughson not only knows all the players but where they played junior and thier home town, it will be a breath of fresh air. Get ready to turn the volume back on because Bob is gone!!!!!

Only CBC would keep a guy on that cant perform and turns off the fans. O sorry the Leafs also belong in that category.

That Bob Cole cares for the game of hockey and given a lot to the sport is undeniable. Nothing personal, but the sport passed you by several years ago. I echo the sentiments of other responders. You haven't been able to keep up with the play for years. When I'm watching on my TV, I want to know who has the puck. I can see everything else. Your play by play announcing had been reduced to generalities about what was happening and not the information I was seeking. So, thanks for all the hard work over the years and enjoy the time off.

It's well past time. As previous commentors have said, the game has passed him by. For the past 2-3 years, I have turned off the sound when the game was on tv because Cole was calling some game that was not being broadcast. He was so far off track with his calls that both my wife and I were laughing when we were listening. It just got silly. Hughson will do a great job because he calls the plays accurately and without all of the flowerly language that just doesn't belong in the game. I'll enjoy watching the games this year even though I would welcome the return of the HNIC original anthen that I have enjoyed since I started watching in the 50's.

Why isn't Madonna President of the U.S.? She's been around for a long time, had much influence on the World's demented behaviour, and could probably dance during intermission. Why not give her HNIC preference? You wouldn't be able to hear her at the sports bar anyway with all the "pro's" yelling and screaming in your ear. I am sure we will end up with an American wannabe/expert on the game of hockey invented by his uncle Cecil from Kentucky doing play by play. I will take Bob any day of the week!

All these no-minds don't have a clue. I watch hockey games without sound because all of the loud mouth "experts" are yelling and screaming in my ear. I can't hear anything being said by any announcer. When I do have the opportunity to hear a play by play, it is nice to hear a calm voice such as Mr. Cole's to make everything clear and understandable rather than some jerk overriding the commentary with their opinion (usually unqualified).
