Should Bob Cole retire from broadcasting?
Wed, September 17, 2008

Harry Neale has not talked to Bob Cole in the past few days.

No matter.

Upon hearing rumblings that his long-time Hockey Night In Canada partner would be usurped by Jim Hughson as the No. 1 play-by-play man on Saturday nights for this upcoming season, Neale was not surprised.

He has, after all, seen this scenario play out before.

It happened exactly one year ago. And the man whose workload was cut was none other than Neale himself.

Do you think Cole's duties on HNIC will be reduced? Should he just retire from broadcasting altogether? Have your say in our forum.

Cole's role shrinking?

The guys a fossil that should have been buried centuries ago. If Foster Hewwitt was alive he'd still be calling the Leafs losses HA HA HA !!!!

It' s funny to hear all of you people make fun of Bob Cole. He has been calling the HNIC games since I began watching hockey, and while Jim Hughson is a great play by play man, I'll still love hearing Bob's voice calling the play by play. I would like to see one of you get up in the booth and see how easy it is, I'll bet you would change your tune then. They already screwed up losing the theme song and if they get rid of Cole, you will see CBC's ratings go down and TSN's go way up.

Sad to say,but Bob should be put out to pasture along with Harry Neale. As much as I've enjoyed the two over the years it's obvious they are missing alot of the play and getting confused more and more as many have pointed out.I just hope that whoever replaces them can do the job justice as they will have big shoes to fill.It just proves that CBC is turfing the old guard to attract a younger audience.Who's next, not Cherry I hope?I guess the times, they are a changin!

Jim Hughson puts me to sleep. Replacing the witty Neale with the annoying Millen was bad enough. If the CBC had any brains, they'd bring in Joe Bowen. Wouldn't it be great if TSN added Cole and Neale with the HNIC theme song?

Tradition is going, going ... gone.

I suppose nothing can last anymore. HNIC was one constant we could all look forward to every weekend. Now that is disappearing, too. Bob Cole was by far the best and most fun to watch. Not perfect, but a treat in the midst of people like Stock, Bradshaw, Simms and other say nothing sports egotists. Since moving stateside 12 years ago, HNIC has remained the enfluence of our cable bill, where the outdoor TV is positioned (next to the pool)getting home in time to hear the "anthem" -now gone- and enjoying Coach's Corner. I suppose it is time to get a life and live like the rest of the southerners; football, basketball, baseball ... hockey is dead thanks to Moore and the rest of the screwballs at HNIC.

He's the best there is in hockey broadcasting anywhere.

The only knock on Bob is that he does too many Leafs games and tends to be too familiar with them. This prevents him from having balance in his commentating. It's only natural. Giving Bob more Ottawa Sens Home games or Montreal Home games will definitely bring more balance to his Broadcast due to his gaining more familiarity with the players on those teams.

I think that a 1/3 mix among these three teams would be fair.

Bob Cole does a great job but I so hope they don't replace him with one of the American broadcasters, who know very little about the game as a whole and are just not Hockey broadcast material.Harry Neale is missed by many. In my opinion No One has been as good as Foster Hewitt.

Sir Robert Cole is a highly talented and respected member of the Sports Media and a fine Newfie to boot.

No one condemned when he became CBC voice on HNIC and now that he has earned the right to ease into retirement, so be it...thew Best To Bob.

I offedr that Sun Media in using USURPER as a description of Jim Hughson best go back to Funk and Wagnall and look up the definition.

Jim Hughson will bring much of a younger Bob Cole to the national HNIC scene and will very much compliment that genre.

Way to go Newfie..and welcome back Jim...in case some are unaware of the days NHL games were callewd by Jim some years ago and by the then much younger Chris Cuthbert....oh my isnt it wonderful that things remain the same even in the face of change.

The CBC is run by a pack of lobotomized chimps why do they try to get rid of everything good about their show? first they get rid of the anthem wich is probably the single dumbest thing ever done on television period but they deside to try and get rid of the voice of hockey for this generation? why arent these people gettin fired? getting rid of bob cole would be one of the last nails in the coffin for a once proud show what are they gonna do next get rid of coaches corner? that will probably be on their agenda next year they cant screw it all up in one year

I'll miss the Saturday night three-in-one games. You know, the game I'm watching, the game the referees are watching, and the game that Bob Cole is calling.
