Should Bob Cole retire from broadcasting?
Wed, September 17, 2008

Harry Neale has not talked to Bob Cole in the past few days.

No matter.

Upon hearing rumblings that his long-time Hockey Night In Canada partner would be usurped by Jim Hughson as the No. 1 play-by-play man on Saturday nights for this upcoming season, Neale was not surprised.

He has, after all, seen this scenario play out before.

It happened exactly one year ago. And the man whose workload was cut was none other than Neale himself.

Do you think Cole's duties on HNIC will be reduced? Should he just retire from broadcasting altogether? Have your say in our forum.

Cole's role shrinking?

Bob will be onboard again this year calling games and fossil names like Chelios for example. In the meantime I'm thinking he's reading these comments and wishing we'd all Puck-off.

Listening to Bob (as well as Harry), is like fingernails on a chalk board for two and a half hours. Torture. Time to move on.

Bob Cole should leave on his own terms. His play by play cannot be matched. I love hearing Cole.

As with many others, Mr. Cole's time has passed, in my opinion. The best PBP guy right now is NBC's Mike Emrick; HNIC would be wise to consider that avenue. As it is, I hit 'mute' when I see Mr. Cole's on the job.

Cole's best-before date has long expired so send him to pasture.

Why do people think that TRADITION means keeping people who are past their prime???? What about HNIC's tradition of excellence in broadcasting? Don't we deserve that?

Yes, Bob Cole was the voice of a generation of hockey fans, but unfortunately he has slipped a bit in the last 2 years. Maybe HNIC should move him to the intermission because he probably has more hockey knowledge and stories than most people out there. I remember listening to Dick Irvin, Brian MacFarlene & Howie Meeker telling their stories over the years and it was a wonderful addition to the intermission. Bob Cole would be very good in that role.

Jim Hugheson is a damn bore, every time I hear his voice, I feel I'm watching a damn video game...

Simply put, Bob Cole's voice and intonation add excitement to every hockey broadcast he does. (think of how difficult that must be when considering that it's the Leaf games we are generally talking about!)

Even when Bob does the late, west coast games, his voice generates more interest, and my bet is that they keep fans longer than any other announcer - especially Jim Hughson, in large part due to that fact.

I agree with the comments that he does too many Leaf games and is too familiar with the players (so how can those folks say he makes too many mistakes???!!!). This is also the case however with other hockey announcers. And I can live with one or two minor transgressions over the course of a 2.5 hour broadcast. His highs FAR OUTWAY any lows.

I fear the day where his voice is not calling those games on Saturday nights. I believe that only when he's gone from the broadcase booth will those who denounce his ability realize how fortunate we were to be able to enjoy his talents.

The fact is that history will place Cole along greats like Foster & Bill Hewitt, Danny Galivan, Ted Darling etc. But like everything in the universe all things do come to an end. And Cole's reign is over. I have actually found it sad the past few years that because of his age Cole makes mistakes that never happened when young. Jim Hughson is excellent at calling hockey games and has paid his dues. Time for Jim to step up to the plate and be the voice of HNIC!

They need someone that knows the names of the opposing players. During the 6th game of a series and the 14th time they've played that year you get tire of hearing. "...the goalie has the puck, the goalie hands it off to the defenseman..."

And that was when the Leafs were still able to make the playoffs.

If the CBC is considering reducing the exposure of, or retiring Bob Cole from HNIC entirely, then one can only hope that the CBC brass will also contemplate getting rid of the Leafs from Saturday night as well
