Will you cheer or jeer Sundin?
Wed, January 7, 2009

TERRY JONES, SUN MEDIA

The world's most expensive hockey rental player, the subject of one of the sorriest "national" sports soap operas of all time, is going to be a major event here tonight, a feature photo-op of this entire NHL season.

Mats Sundin, after practice in Vancouver, gave himself the green light, boarded the flight and arrived here yesterday with the Canucks preparing to play in tonight's tilt against the Edmonton Oilers.

Will you cheer or jeer Sundin's return to the NHL? Have your say in our forum.

Sundin could make Canucks debut against Oilers

Mats should play on his sailboat,on the golf course, and with his girlfriend.Anywhere but for the Leafs. He has so much money now that he's lost his motivation to play hockey. He would rather play with his girl friend and relax on his Baltic Sea beach. And then if that gets too boring he can jump in the Volvo and shoot a round of golf. Now you can see why the decision is soooo hard for him!

Mats should play for Toronto. With his leadership and proven playoff performance this could be the year that the Leafs finally win it all. With brilliant signings like Finger, Hagmann, etc the Leafs now need a guy like Sundin to bring it all together.

You can pick up a big lazy house cat at any vet clinic for free. To pay 10 million for one is absurd.

And the owners have the gall to whine about salaries?

There's a village somewhere in Canada that's lost their idiot to the Vancouver Canucks. Matts should go there.

Who cares but maple laffs fans. Sundin has not or ever win anything in the play

offs.

Sundin is a great player but c'mon what's with the Favre like soul searching? Mats be a grown up and commit and live with your decision. Either way people will respect you. Sitting on the fence is just frustrating for all (leaf fans or not).

For the Leaf fans out there - if you do in fact retire; shame on you. You could of closed out your career without negatively impacting anyone's perceptions and at the same time, more positively position the club you hold so much reverance for (??)

Believe me, your indecision speaks volumes about your leadership skills

Sweden.

I think Matts should just hang up his skates and go on back home where he belongs.I'm sick of hearing about what he is going to do.Just say who he wants to play for and get it over with.

At the start of July, I wrote on a string that Sundin would be a good fit in Montreal, I even said he could help the Habs win a cup.

I'm not so sure about Sundin anymore. If it's August and he's still on the fence about playing - never mind where - it's real possible he's done.

Although athletes keep their bodies in top shape during offseasons - it takes a mental toughness to go through the grind of a full hockey season, and more through the playoffs.

It could very well be, he does not want to continue at such a level.

It could also be his options. Barry says there's 6 teams in the hunt. We know of 3 for sure. Out of the Leafs, the Canucks, and the Habs: the only team with a real shot at Stanley right now are the Habs - and It still would be tough sledding.

If Sundin were to decide to play for the Habs - he would be hailed as a major piece to a Cup coming in, but for 7 million a season - far surpassing anyone on the Habs - Sundin would have to put up almost point per game numbers and nothing less than a Cup would be considered a success.

I don't even want to think about the what if's negative - such as injury or diminished production and the journalistic fodder this would create.

After all, once Bob Gianey announced his intention to try to pursuade Sundin to come to Montreal; it wasn't long before I saw a repeat of Pierre Page bawling out Sundin and another Quebec Nordiques

player from the 93 playoffs where the Nordiques fizzled losing 4 straight to the Habs after being up 2 games to 0.

We sure know how to entice the free agents don't we!

The sharks over here don't

forgive or forget; and with evetyone in Montreal

getting a serious

taste of playoff fever this year - the pressure would be on 24/7.

So Sundin, I hope that if you decide to play, amd if

you play here... you be ready - and bring more than a couple of swedish meatballs - cause you're going to need it.

I've been a life long Leaf fan and as far as I'm concerned, Mats should just retire. I'm sick of hearing about all of the Mats hype. Mats was too selfish to help them at the trade deadliner and he just needs to go away. Enough already...

I am getting SO tired of all of this Sundin non-news. I'll be interested in hearing where he signs, when it finally happens, but do we need to hear that he yet to make a decision EVERY single day??
