Will you cheer or jeer Sundin?
Wed, January 7, 2009

TERRY JONES, SUN MEDIA

The world's most expensive hockey rental player, the subject of one of the sorriest "national" sports soap operas of all time, is going to be a major event here tonight, a feature photo-op of this entire NHL season.

Mats Sundin, after practice in Vancouver, gave himself the green light, boarded the flight and arrived here yesterday with the Canucks preparing to play in tonight's tilt against the Edmonton Oilers.

Will you cheer or jeer Sundin's return to the NHL? Have your say in our forum.

Sundin could make Canucks debut against Oilers

Can't believe all this Sundin bashing because he's undecided if he wants to play. Like many fans I too wish he would make up his mind but I respect his right to take his time and make sure he makes the decision that's right for him. He doesn't owe anyone anything so how is being selfish? If he doesn't look after his best interest who will? The NHL owners with their long (pre union - Busher Jackson) history of discarding players to beg on the streets?

I defy those that call Mats selfish to give one example of him being selfish as a player and before you say "he didn't waive his no trade" I ask why in h@#! should he? It was his negotiated right and a right I think he more than earned after years of carrying the Leafs on his back.

As for being a chicken Swede the poster who made that comment reveals his own idiocy, Did Lemieux go out and fight, how bout Gretzky, Stevie Y, Jean Beliveau, Vincent Lecavalier etc etc were/are they all chicken players too?

And response to all the Sens fans who have bashing Sundin and calling him merely "an above average player" isn't strange that the Sens are among the teams interested in signing him? If its just because its a chance to stick it to the Leafs then the Sens organization is a lot stupider than I thought because that's the dumbest possible reason to sign a player.

I think most Leafs fans expect to miss the play offs this year and understand that sometimes you have to step back to go forward. Besides even if the Leafs don't make the playoffs this year when the season is over they'll still have won at least as many if not more playoff games in the last 12 years as the Sens have managed.

I almost feel a severe double standard is happening here.

why was/is it ok when both niedemeyer & selanne did the same thing last year? why were these same fans not crucifying them as they are Sundin?

why is his leadership qualities being questioned when Yzerman lead by example on the ice rather than the dressing room? are they not "similar" in nature?

how can we question an individual's committment to continuing playing a game? committment to a management challenged organization? have we not all been in the same position in maybe not going into work or quitting to find a new job/career?

this is a 38 year old individual who has been playing a game for probably 33 years, working for a challenged team with (at times) equally changed teammates.

he is in a position (financially) we would all love to be in, and can take his time in making his next step.

Lets be done with this...enough...he should go to Ompah, ice fishing.

Matt should just go AWAY. He has obviously lost his passion for the game, and hopefully this was not the level of indecision going on behind closed doors in the Leafs dressing room all those years. And if by chance, he wakes up one morning and decides he really truly wants to play, every NHL team should say, "Sorry Matt, you waited too long, our rosters are already full."

I remember a few years back when the Leafs were building a team to beat the Devils and what happened. The two teams never crossed paths and the Leafs were too old and slow to compete with the Flyers and the Hurricanes. So go for it Ottawa, sign the Swede if you can.

Mats, please, anywhere but to Ottawa!

Now we hear reports that Melnyk would like to sign Mats, as it would be a major blow to Leaf Nation in the Battle of Ontario.

Therein lies the problem for the Senators organization - they measure everything they do against the Maple Leafs and plan their future on that basis. All of the playoff losses to the Leafs still sting I guess. It's like the little brother always trying to be like his hugely successful big brother - Sad!!!

The Leafs are struggling talent-wise right now but the Senators can only dream of being as great an organization as Leaf Nation. The Leafs are finally making some solid moves for the future.

Sundin should go back for at least one more year for TO, this guy has been accused of lacking leadership, but he's always been at the top of the pack since he came into the NHL. Toronto Maple Leafs should be sold to someone who actually cares about winning and not just making money, the current owners do not deserve the Leafs. We are the second leading team with cup wins in the NHL and we deserve the best.

Who Cares????? Once again Toronto this and Toronto that!!

Mr.MeMeMe Mats should go back to "Chicken Swede" land and play with his "Chicken Swede" brethern. Then he can be the "Chicken Swede" that he has always been in the NHL. Besides...it has been the only time in his career that he seemed to play with any emotion was when he wore the three "Chicken Crowns" of Sweden jersey in International competition. Play anywhere but in Toronto Mr. MeMeMe Mats. Because we are sick and tired of your dog & pony show of selfishness.
