Will you cheer or jeer Sundin?
Wed, January 7, 2009

TERRY JONES, SUN MEDIA

The world's most expensive hockey rental player, the subject of one of the sorriest "national" sports soap operas of all time, is going to be a major event here tonight, a feature photo-op of this entire NHL season.

Mats Sundin, after practice in Vancouver, gave himself the green light, boarded the flight and arrived here yesterday with the Canucks preparing to play in tonight's tilt against the Edmonton Oilers.

Will you cheer or jeer Sundin's return to the NHL? Have your say in our forum.

Sundin could make Canucks debut against Oilers

Jake, Im not sure how you figure the Senators model themselves after the Leafs. If that were the case wouldnt they trade all their prospects, make dumbfounding draft decisions, give mediocre players bloated no-movement contracts and then miss the playoffs for two years?

"they are struggling talent wise right now". wha..?You're completely out to lunch. Thats like saying you only have a little bit of cancer.

"the Leafs are finally making solid moves for the future.". The basic idea was sound: buy out Tucker,McCabe, etc., suck for a while, get solid draft picks, be patient and develop. Seems simple, long no doubt, but necessary. Then Finger,Hagman,Mayers and assorted others enter the circus. Fletch must be senile or something, because instead of gaining some picks he actually wound up giving more away for a whole lot of nothing. Hagman may perhaps turn out well, but the Leafs have a knack of making promising youngsters into stickboys. An already barren farm system is now even worse, and all that for a roster that will compete with NYI for dead last.

You are a sadly optimistic but ultimately delusional person. The Leafs need to look at teams like Washington,Chicago, Pittsburgh,Edmonton,Phoenixand especially Detroit to see what smart drafting looks like. The Red Wings are a no-brainer and all the others are teams loaded with young talent and farm systems well-stocked for the future. Until MLSEL realizes they can't just throw money around anymore, they will continue to fail.

Will this topic ever die? Maybe they should just postpone the NHL season until Mats decides if and where he's going to play again. You'd almost think the whole world is holding its breath wondering what his decision will be.

Russia sounds like a great place for him.

Ottawa trying to sign Sundin would be moving backwards for the club. The new Mr. Dithers should be left to sit in Sweden or wherever else he wants to. If I were a GM and a player couldn't make up his mind if he wanted to play, I would not even think about him, there are a lot of young hungry players who want a shot to worry about an over-priced free agent has been/never was.

Where should Mats Sundin go you ask. How about just going away and retire.
Len, 2008-09-10 18:47:29

I think that people should just let him alone. He has every right to take his time. He is a free agent and is obviously wanted badly enough by several teams, so I think that he is making a fine choice in waiting. And by the way, for those of you who don't know, his name is Mats, not Matt.
Aaron, 2008-09-10 18:35:34

Mats to Ottawa!!! Seems like Garrioch was searching around desperately for something to write about in one-sport Ottawa and decided to throw that out for consumption.

Most likely gagged from laughing. The only way Murray could "clear space" for him would be to get rid of everyone from the 2nd and third lines at once - or one of Heatly, Spezza or Alfreddson.

Don't hold your breath waiting for THAT to happen.
Gary O., 2008-09-10 18:33:53

Mats should do what a maple leaf does. In the fall the leaf falls off the tree and blows away. Mats, your in the autumn of your career. just blow away

Why would Sundin play for Ottawa? There is not ONE good reason that he'd play for Ottawa. If he won't play for Toronto, the team he's played 13 years for or Vancouver, that offerred him $10 million a year or a team with a REAL chance for a Stanley Cup, why would he want to play for Ottawa?

What a dumb news report!
cappthook, 2008-09-10 17:59:30

Sundin, if he decides to return to hockey , belongs in Toronto. That is where his heart is, that is where he would be happy to finish up. I really don't think he wants to start over again somewhere else. Why hasn't he decided yet? I have a feeling there is a female in the picture vying for his time. Let's see.
