Will you cheer or jeer Sundin?
Wed, January 7, 2009

TERRY JONES, SUN MEDIA

The world's most expensive hockey rental player, the subject of one of the sorriest "national" sports soap operas of all time, is going to be a major event here tonight, a feature photo-op of this entire NHL season.

Mats Sundin, after practice in Vancouver, gave himself the green light, boarded the flight and arrived here yesterday with the Canucks preparing to play in tonight's tilt against the Edmonton Oilers.

Will you cheer or jeer Sundin's return to the NHL? Have your say in our forum.

Sundin could make Canucks debut against Oilers

Here's a question, and I don't know the answer to it. What are the NHL's rules with respect to the affiliation of players with gambling.

I've recently seen advertisements for Pokerstars.net I believe featuring none other than Mats with Daniel Negranau (sp?).

Can you be in the NHL and also promote gambling on TV? If not, does this mean he's finished in the NHL?

Any thoughts?

I think the Maple Leafs should move on. Sundin is still a very good player, but they need to forge a new identity and let their younger players develop without a dependence upon one star player like Sundin.

They are doing pretty good so far and are learning to be a close-knit team, unlike the past number of years with Sundin and the likes of Tucker and McCabe.

If Fletcher can sign Sundin without a no-trade clause, maybe that would be okay - and then trade him at the deadline and get a couple of prospects.

Otherwise, let's move on!

i,m beginning to think that most people who have e-mailed their comments, are not hockey fans but are people who hate Toronto in general. There is not one team in the nhl that would not want a Mats Sundin. The numbers that he as put up in Toronto, and played most of his career with nobody on his wing.Point a game player.1305 games played and 1321 points, very good numbers on a pretty bad team for most of his career. imagine him with Heatley and Spezza, or with Zetterburg, and datyzuk.Look what happened in Turin when he had line mates,8 games played and 8 points, turned into gold metal. This guy as more to offer any team then 95% of the players in the league, even at 37 years old, just give him someone to play with.

Mats has a funny effect on teams. He's a laid back star. No leader in the traditional sense of a Wendel or a Dougie or a Bobby Clarke or a Sittler. He's better off playing for a team where he has an "A" rather than a "C".

I can;t even explain how pathetic it is that any team would even let Sundin back in the NHL, but I'll give it a shot anyway. He thinks he has earned the right to take as much time as he wants to make a decision? It's a case of you're either a part of the team or you're not. Period. It's the same issue with Neidermayer from last season. Start with the team at the beginning, or don't play. All Sundin has done is become a distraction for any team he ends up with. What exactly is so spectacular about him anyway? No Cup, over the hill, and rarely a deciding factor in any major game his teams have played in. His skill is gone, his ego is huge and he has nothing to offer anymore except for a crappy attitude and an ever increasing forehead. Stay out the NHL Mats, we want people who want to play for more than a paycheque, and actually care about being a team player.

Mats should grab a mitt and get into the game. This is ridiculous

I remember writing in June and as a die-hard Habs fan, I was excited at the prospect of Mats becoming a Hab! I have always respected him as a hockey player.

However, the LONGER his "indecission" went on, the more annoying and obnoxious it became. In the end I was happy to hear that Bob Gainey basically told Mats that if he didn't want to be part of his team during training camp, then the offer was gone.

I think he has annoyed more people by not being part any team from the beginning. Maybe his heart isn't in it anymore? And if it isn't, how effective will he be?

Talking of whipping a dead horse, dont you ideot's know this story was dead a year ago when this has been wouldn't sign a new contract. Get over it and get on with life. You are one sad sports media when you life in the past like you do. Look at the tight race in the west in football and hockey. Yes there is a west in this country, you eastern sports media are so self centred. Get on with life and start reporting sports events not "as the world turns" and "general hospital" soap opera's.

Hey Rickey lee you should stop smoking that cheap Toronto pot its really making you say stupid commets.

When Toronto best player is the top scorer is injured and still is your best scorer then your chances at the cup are really not very good are they?

Personally Sundin should be banned from playing in the NHL because he is making a mockery out of the league and would create a league of cry babies when they don't get traded to a contender

go play in Russia Ron Wilson wants players who want to play hockey. He is trying to purge the Leafs of that now. You as captain have allowed this country club atmosphere. Go to Russian league where you can collect a few bucks and no one will care if you really enjoy your big lazy armchair. Emotion is what the leafs need. Remember Wendal or maybe douggie. That is what Wilson and Schenn bring to our team finally.Bye Mats the Leafs aren't going to be doorMats anymore.
