Will you cheer or jeer Sundin?
Wed, January 7, 2009

TERRY JONES, SUN MEDIA

The world's most expensive hockey rental player, the subject of one of the sorriest "national" sports soap operas of all time, is going to be a major event here tonight, a feature photo-op of this entire NHL season.

Mats Sundin, after practice in Vancouver, gave himself the green light, boarded the flight and arrived here yesterday with the Canucks preparing to play in tonight's tilt against the Edmonton Oilers.

Will you cheer or jeer Sundin's return to the NHL? Have your say in our forum.

Sundin could make Canucks debut against Oilers

Way too much ink used in regards to his situation!!

Mats should just call it quits and go coach a junior team back in Sweden!

Like many here have mentioned, I believe that every player playing in the NHL should count their blessings; have the opportunity to "play" hockey and be paid a ridiculous amount of cash should be enough to get them to reconsider any "greater than thou" attitude Mats seems to have used...

In any case, any team that takes him up should ask for a refund if "Mister" Mats doesn't live up to the level any team should expect him to be...

Oh and lastly, I just hope that he really shows his true nature when he comes back to play and screws up royally... that way it will prove to everyone that he just should have retired...

I have to laugh at Leaf fans who think Sundin did the Leafs a big disservice by not opting out of his no-trade clause. Did he really owe it to the fans to go somewhere else so the Leafs could get draft picks or young talent? That's not his job. He was loyal right up to the end, he played his guts out with broken bones in his face for a team who stunk the whole time. He lead the team in scoring all but one year, did countless volunteering roles and now the fans have stabbed him in the back. He stuck around till his contract was up! Blame Ferguson for the countless notrade contracts. Sundin is not the bad guy here!

I believe he'll sign with the Rangers and they'll make it to the confrence finals but lose. Mats, you played with class the whole time you were a Leaf.

Stop blaming Sundin for the Leafs not having a future! They sucked long before he ever showed in town.

Back to Sweden....no one really cares if he plays in the NHL.

c'mon...matts doesn't believe in rent a player, afterall, isn't it all about the journey? what we have here is another Dave Keon kiddies, poor guy got asked to "take one" for an organization that's been really cool to him over the years and now he's been offended. I for one won't be cheering for the guy, it's all about $$$.. always has been.

I don't where Mats is going, but I am going to the washroom to throw-up.. If I can make it. If I don't, look for me at the Grocery store, renting the carpet cleaner.. I will keep you all posted!!

Like who cares?
trish, 2008-12-18 13:35:59

does it really matter now. last year at the trade deadline he babbled on about how he would not waive his no trade clause BECAUSE ... he feels that a player should be with a team right from training camp. a player must go through the entire journey, as he called it, right out of training camp. he doesn't believe in joining a team half way through a season. he's the second coming of Roger Clemens. totally full of s*@t. the swedish con man. as far as i am concerned Mats Sundin and Tomas Kaberle are the 2 players to have done the most long term damage to this franchise. i know one thing for sure, when Mats does come back to play in T.O, i will be standing on my seat booing as loud and often as i can. i don't have a problem with Mats saying he wouldn't waive his no trade, my beef is with his reasoning and the fact that he has no proven himself to be a liar.

I hope when Mats Sundin retires (in only a few years) that the Maple Leafs never take him back or honor him in any way. Once you leave you leave for good!
John Ashbridge, 2008-12-18 13:06:32

Who cares where he goes, he's only in it for a few quick bucks. Between this and the Avery fiasco, the NHL is loosing more and more fans everyday.

People loosing real jobs everyday and all the media focuses on is how much a milionaire will get paid for 3 or four months work......disgusting!!!!!

Ok, so here's the deal.. I am a Habs fan.. and of course a hockey fan in general. I used to think that Sundin was "up there" on my list, not just as a hockey player, but also for the kind of man he is with charities and so on.

I gotta tell ya though, he has officially lost my respect. I'm sorry, but to make all these teams scramble with players, salary caps, and so on until MR decided where HE thinks he should go has just erked me the wrong way. It's selfish, unfair, not realistic, and sad. No way to end a career, much less the one he had. Too bad.
