Will you cheer or jeer Sundin?
Wed, January 7, 2009

TERRY JONES, SUN MEDIA

The world's most expensive hockey rental player, the subject of one of the sorriest "national" sports soap operas of all time, is going to be a major event here tonight, a feature photo-op of this entire NHL season.

Mats Sundin, after practice in Vancouver, gave himself the green light, boarded the flight and arrived here yesterday with the Canucks preparing to play in tonight's tilt against the Edmonton Oilers.

Will you cheer or jeer Sundin's return to the NHL? Have your say in our forum.

Sundin could make Canucks debut against Oilers

So it was about greed after all.The bum is now overpaid by about $9,900,000.00.What a joke.

Great the saga ends. It is also great that he is in the western conference. He knows if he were on an eastern conference team he would hear the boos of the leaf fans more often.Rent a player he now is. Took all us leaf fans for a ride. You will fit in nicely with all the other baby bone Sweeds that Vancouver has. Enjoy your country club Mats Thanks for nothing.

I think Sundin made the right choice for him, financially speaking, as well as for the the team, professionally speaking. He'll fit right in with the team and I think the city of Vancouver, which by the way, has minimal amounts of snow.

As for Toronto, well, I wouldn't take too much in any of this. After all it was the TO media that elevated Matts to diety-like status. They were the ones who kept it alive for so long and dragged it out for what seemed to be forever.

I'm just glad the distraction is finally gone.

Every member of the Leaf nation should be ticked off and feel betrayed by this. He would not wave his no-trade at last season's deadline because he did not want to be a rental player. I'm not math whiz but say for argument the Habs had 35 games left at the deadline, Vancouver has 50 left right now so say they play 5 before he hits the line. that means at max he'll play 45 for the Canucks. So 10 games made the difference in his grand philosopy on being a rental player. The Leafs were had plain and simple, lost out one good player as we got the other guy anyhow, and some draft picks. He should not be reverved by the Leaf nation but resented and not held in the same esteem as other former Leaf greats no matter what the stats his place in history is.

Canucks are a good regular season team. They don't have the heart to do well in the playoffs.

Look for Canucks out in first or second round.

yes he made the right move...for the coin that is...unfortunately he was not informed that the canucks have a tendancy to choke in the second half of the season and will likely miss or back into the playoffs and start golfing early again this year...its not like this guy has any winning experience to bring to the room...gotta love 5+ mill for a 37 yr old guy will still have to regain his gameshape and play in the division with by far the worst travel requirements...enjoy!

Can you folks please put an end to the Sundin stories. There must be enough sports teams to find topics to write about other than Sundin. He made the right move leaving Toronto and giving the Leafs a chance to finally become a competitive team.

Mats, I wish you all the best and I'm sorry to see you go. If Leaf fans want to blame anyone it is MLSE and their total mismanagement of the hockey club. Mats did everything they asked of him, he conducted himself with class and he will no doubt bring those qualities to the Canucks. I don't think he'll get a sniff at the cup in Vancouver so I don't think he choose the right team, but time will tell.

Now that he is away from the nightmare that is the Leafs it will be interesting to see if he can succeed in a classy organization

Who cares! Who is Mats Sundin? I can't even believe the media has paid so much attention to this. When Wayne Gretzky was ready to retire he did all in his power to minmize the impact on his team and hockey in general. This clown has been the center of his owne media circus for what benefit to anyone but himself. What has Sundin won in his career. Give me a break!
