Can any modern Leafs be considered "all-time greats"?
Mon, July 21, 2008

Wendel Clark and Doug Gilmour will soon take their place among the Toronto Maple Leafs' all-time greats.

The popular former Leafs captains will have banners raised at the Air Canada Centre in separate pre-game ceremonies this season to honour their achievements with the NHL club.

For a team which has not accomplished anything for the last 40 years, why honour those players, since

is them who never got the job done.

For anyone who might have forgotten...I have not. I am a leaf fan and I will admit some bias. I won't go into the many times that either of these players single handedly rose to the occasion and won the game for Toronto. And believe it or not Toronto has had seasons when they was a force to be reckoned with within the last 40 years. Anyone who watched the leafs in the finals in 1993 will admit that both Clark and Gilmour deserve "All Time Great" designation. Numerous games went into double overtime and at times almost impossible odds (Cujo) yet with Gilmour behind the net and an insatiable will to win Toronto dominated. Wendel didn't hesitate when Marty McSorely elbowed Gilmour. These guys came to play every game. Many will scoff but I believe if it wasn't of the utmost importance to the NHL to develop the US market, the leafs would have won the Stanley Cup in 1993.

Without a doubt, the spirit and energy that these two players brought to the game, and the excitement their enthusiasim generated should assure a spot. This is a tribute to the masters of Hockey, and honors the true Ambassadors of the sport. The CUP honors the winning teams, but it is the fan base that remembers their individual heroes of the game, Salut

Although not a Leaf fan by any means, the answer from this observer is "of course players over the past 40 years can be considered All-time greats." Salming, for one, would qualify even if the question was league-wide. So would Sundin for that matter, as would Sittler who had the misfortune to play on some pretty awful teams. And Lanny McDonald.

For Toronto - yes. For winning teams...? No.

To answer the QUESTION, Sundin might be a modern Leaf that can be considered an "all-time great".

But as mentioned below, this is the Leafs honouring former players so any fan favourite could be considered a great. In a few years it'll be Tucker and Domi that will have banners raised.

when the franchise is inept as the Maple Leafs, then they are all time greats.

Accolades wise they may not be "all-time greats" but this isn't the NHL honouring them. Wendel Clark was the Toronto Maple Leafs and the fans loved him and still do. I think it's a shame they didn't do something sooner. Number 17 will always be the captain of the Leafs and the sooner he has somekind of roll behind the bench and not just at P.R. events, the better.

What a stupid question this is. Apparently, if a team doesn't win the Cup then it doesn't have any players considered all-time greats? Keep in mind this honour is within the Leafs organization, not the NHL. But under the asinine premise of this question, players cannot be considered all-time greats because they didn't win a Cup.

(And that's exactly what "Leafs from the last 40 years" means, since the team last won a Cup in 67.

I have a poll question: Should the person who thought of this question be fired for being so lazy he/she could only come up with this garbage?
