Would Doug Gilmour be a good hockey coach?
Thu, July 10, 2008

Doug Gilmour's desire to re-invent himself as a coach could lead the Maple Leafs icon to another National Hockey League team.

While the Leafs are trying to accommodate their former captain and franchise playoff scoring leader, there might not be any immediate opportunities for him here. Gilmour, 44, declared his new ambition in the past few months before officially ending two years as player development adviser on Tuesday when Joe Nieuwendyk was hired as Cliff Fletcher's special assistant.

TALK ABOUT PESSIMISM ALL OVER THE HOCKEY WORLD. HOW DIFFICULT DO YOU THINK IT WAS FOR STEVIE TO HANDLE ALL OF THE POLITICS AS A PLAYER AND HOW TO GET HIS PLAYERS PUMPPED UP WHILE HE WAS CAPTAIN FOR THE MANY CUPS DURING THE TIME HE WAS #13 AS A DETROIT RED WING AND STILL PEOPLE ARE NOT KEEN ON DOUG BECOMING A COACH. THERE HAVE BEEN MANY COMMENTS THAT THE JUNIOR'S IS THE BEST FIT? WELL I DISAGREE. KIRK MULLER (ASST.) TO GUY, WAS SAID TO BE A DISASTER AND ALL I HEARD WAS "HOW ABOUT THOSE HABS?", ALL YEAR. SHIRT RETIRED AND IN THE HALL OF FAME, I THINK THE MAN KNOWS THE GAME AND I BELIEVE HE CAN SWITCH HIS PLAYER THOUGHTS INTO THE GAMES AND HEARTS OF WHATEVER TEAM PICKS HIM FOR A HEAD COACH. THE LEAFS HAVE TO MAKE MAJOR CHANGES IN THEIR LINE-UP IF ANY PLAY-OFFS ARE GOING TO BE IN THEIR FUTURE. CHANGING OF JUST THE COACH WILL NOT MAKE THE PLAYERS STAND UP. DOUG SHOULD HAVE ALREADY BEEN ASKED BY A YOUNG TEAM TO TAKE THE HEALM AND JUST WATCH HIS ABILITIES FLOW THROUGH THE SKATES OF HIS TEAM.

Wow I wouldn't want to be sitting around the Sports Bar with you guys trying to have a meaningful discussion on this subject.Beer bottles would be flying, knuckles getting skinned, noses broken and bloodied, hair ripped out,and insults galore! Can't yous respect that each one has different and legitimate opinions without insulting and bashing each other because you don't agree?Oh I guess theres no fun in that!

Wayne and Pete

No doubt your mommy read you my last. Guess you were falling asleep or your pea-brains just couldn't understand the tongue-in-cheek comments I made.

I was actually (yes I am spelling this out for you) making fun of those previous posters that claimed the Gilmour would make a good coach JUST BECAUSE HE USED TO PLAY THE GAME.

And another thing goofball Peatmoss...where does it state I coached house league for a year????
Dazed and Confused, 2008-07-21 13:54:39

Jimmy, Pete and Wayne. You three should get a tv show and label it dumb, dumber and dumberest. What makes you think that dazed and confused would not make as good a coach or better than Gilmour? You know absolutely nothing about him. You chastize him for comparing himself to Gilmour, then you compare Gilmour to Gretzky. That's even more laughable. There not even in the same zip code morons. What in the makeup of Doug Gilmour would make him this wonder coach you all profess. And what is it about dazed and confused that would not. Just because I fix jet engines does not mean I can fly the plane.
Disgruntledfan, 2008-07-21 12:20:46

you guys are all idiots. And no, doug gilmour would amke a terrible coach,he never used stratagie, he just played hockey.
Jimmy, 2008-07-20 10:38:00

dazed and confused

Tell me what coaching experience Gretzky had ? I can tell you, none, zero, zilch and look how far he has come.

Pathetic comment and pretty laughable that you compared your being a former player and coach to someone of Gilmour's status.

Were you high or drunk when you typed that dribble ? Because it was really, really bad, just as bad as disgruntled crybaby posts are.
Wayne, 2008-07-19 06:12:55

dazed and confused

what a lame and idiotic comment. yea you would make a better coach than a former NHL player because you played and coached house league for a year, good one you clown
Pete, 2008-07-19 06:05:42

Who can tell? Has he had ANY coaching experience? At any level? I used to coach minor hockey, does that mean I would make a good NHL coach? Oh yeah, I used to play hockey too...so it stands to reason that would make me a BETTER coach.

I don't know who comes up with these dumb suggestions for topics, but what you are asking in this one assumes quite a lot. Not too many of us know him personally, not too many of know if he ever coached at any level in hockey. So on what basis are we to form an honest opinion?
Dazed and Confused, 2008-07-16 13:09:57

Doug Gilmour would probably be a great coach, but he needs to work his way to the NHL. It isn't everyone that can step in and have success at the NHL level - Gretzky for example in Pheonix probably wonders WHY on some nights. And the pressure is far worse working for some teams.

Killer was a great player with lot's of heart, and determination. Those 2 qualities would serve him well as a coach once he gains the other tools needed.
