Who's right in the Burke-Lowe feud?
Tue, July 8, 2008

The NHL has warned feuding general managers Kevin Lowe and Brian Burke that they need to end their public dispute or face significant fines.

The warning for Edmonton’s Lowe and Anaheim’s Burke came during a conference call with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, deputy commissioner Bill Daly and executive vice-president Colin Campbell.

Burke criticism’s of Lowe began last July after the Oilers made a US$21.25-million, five-year offer sheet to restricted free agent Dustin Penner and the Ducks did not match it. Burke has repeatedly blamed Lowe and the Penner offer sheet for spiralling salaries on young restricted free agents.

Lowe finally shot back at Burke on July 4 during an interview that included some stinging comments about the Anaheim GM on Edmonton radio station The Team 1260.

After all the dust has settled, who do you think is right? Have your say in our forum.

Neither one is right to air their dirty laundry and sling mud in public. It gives the NHL a bad rap,but to be fair to both of them the media got them both going at one another just because it makes good press during the off season.

Everyone needs to give their head a shake.Burke, while going on entirely too long is right. The trike\lockout was exactly what the game needd. It brought salaries in line so that all teams could be competitive. What Lowe has done is starting to drive the price up for these players.I think that hockey over the last two seasons has been the most entertaining in years, when was the last time the the cup winner wasn't obvious? Letting the salaries of restricted free agents get out of hand will put us back where we were before the cap.

ooooooh! nhl execs cant take some smack talk? lowe told the truth! burke goofed on penner, had tons of time to resign him before lowe did, and replased him w bertuzzi (LOL!) id rather have fletch as leaf gm than burke

I'm not impressed by either one of these guys. Burke started publicly thrashing Lowe unfairly. He was wrong to begin with Kevin Lowe only did what was within the rules. Burke did not like the rules after they worked against him. Tough nuts Brian! His negative comments about the Lowe signing of Dustin Penner ring of collusion within the NHL.

Kevin Lowe should have quietly gone to the League to protest Burke's public verbal flogging. Maybe he did, maybe he didn't. His public reaction and name calling of Burke ultimately placed him in the wrong.

Bettman is the problem,i will celebrate when he is gone.

I will soooo miss the drama on the slow hockey days this summer. That being said Burke isnt the guy for the Leafs as he has talked his way out of ever pulling the sly move that the Leafs may need the next few years. Burke has blown it for himself and I dont want to see him headingfshe Leafs with some twisted cant win for contracts logic.

It doesn't really matter who is right, they should just stop bickering.

Lowe's offer to Dustin Penner was ridiculous, but it's done, so let's move on.

I agree with the last comment. They allowed Burk to shoot off his mouth for a year and as soon as Lowe responds the league gets into it. Way to go Bettman, you fool!

This just shows the difference between "Disneyland" and "Oil Country" ... Burke can rant and rave for a year but it just takes one news conference from the Oilers and now the NHL brass is involved .. guess when Kevin Lowe speaks people listen !!!! Go Oilers Go !!!!!

The only thing that remains to be seen now is how large of a fine Burke is going to get because everyone knows he can't keep his trap shut.
