Matts Sundin has been the absolute best Leaf since Frank Mahovolich...not quite as exciting but he played longer as a Leaf...I agree, the Leafs should make a huge effort to sign him and show they want a winning team...Matts is a classy guy and should end his career with the Leafs and a cup !!

Need to remember that the leafs have been good to Sundin too. Millions of ways. If he is such a leader then how can he hamstring the directions the club takes. What difference can a couple of weeks take to make a decision, two years in a row. Sounds like a new fad...

bob - Commodore has played close to 300 games in the NHL. Fingers has all of 94 under his belt. Hard pressed to think of the last guy to have played that few games and receive that kind of contract.
DisgruntledFan, 2008-07-03 19:07:04

Everyone is complaining about Fingers 4 year deal at 3.5/year. I haven't seen this guy and I don't know what he's about but can it be any worse than Columbus signing Mike Commodore for 5 years at 3.75/year?

Toronto should pack up and go home. Fletcher should go in a retirement home. Glavoski from Montreal. They should have kept Wellwood. They let go certain players and they go get worse. Finger for a defensmen its getting worse every day. Like I said the should fold the Maple Leafs. I have been a fan all my life and I'm 57 but I'm switching team. Also the salary they are giving these players that is rediculous. No hockey player is worth that much. From now on I will be cheering for a different team.

I can answer that with one word: Bettman. With that clown in charge it's going to get worse.

We lost a hole year of our sport because the owner couldn't make money, now they can afford to pay stupid salary's so why did we lose hockey for a year, this free agency was a joke

Interesting how this has turned into a Matts Sundin contest ! In case some of you did not know pro hockey (and sports) is ALL business...so I admire Matts for his stance right now...he will decide his future when he is ready. Pro athletes are not always known for their brains but here is a guy that knows whats best for him and its not just about the money. He had been a great player for the Leafs, the league and the sport of hockey and I wish him all the best in his decision...

You know I feel sorry for hockey fans in general here. GM's are not being rational with their spending but at the same time the agents always have them where they want them. Anytime GM's start saying he isn't worth it, the players and the agents turn around and say it's collusion. It also hurts the cause when there are dumb GM's who will pay players more than they are worth.(Huet more than Brodeur - are you crazy)

As for Sundin, Fletcher should turn around and talk to Sundin and JP Barry and ask for a helping hand in what it will take to get Sundin back in Toronto. See, I have a feeling that Mats is waiting for that one special gesture from Toronto before he says yes to coming back. Sundin is a very proud man and a good one to. He has served the Leafs and Toronto with dignity and grace and has helped bring back a little luster to a city that was sullied by Ballard and the management of the late 70's and 80's.

All of this just proves that the cap is not working. When Sundin can turn down $10M at his stage of career and Hossa can walk away from ridiculous money just to go to the Wings, they are a) making too much money and b) the cap is too high. The goal of the cap is to make all teams competitive but when teams like Edmonton have to throw millions at fringe players just to get them to pay attention and star players take less to go to the champ, this is not working. When the cap goes up nearly $7M for no good reason then guess what, the cash strapped Wings now have extra to sign Hossa. And when the cap goes up nearly 50% in 3 years when the average fan's salary is going down, something is wrong.

Maybe they should let the teams pay what they can and have a virtual salary cap based upon player performance. Guys like Osgood that sign for a pittance and then win the cup would be counted higher based upon their performance. I don't like penalizing well-run franchises that players want to play for, but I would like to see any franchise have a shot if they are making sound hockey decisions.
