What trades need to be made this NHL off-season?
Tue, June 17, 2008

The NHL's entry draft is the showcase event but make no mistake, the league's 30 GMs arrive in Ottawa this week for another reason as well.

Trade talk. "There's no doubt that a lot of teams are looking to do something," interim Toronto Maple Leafs GM Cliff Fletcher said Tuesday. "There will be a lot of dialogue." Some years the entry draft serves as a platform for several blockbuster moves. Other years, it's quiet.

What the hell happened to that trade rumour between CHI, LA ad OTT that would bring Khabibulin to Ottawa?? That seemed like a good one, but nothing's been said about it in days. Is it dead in the canal water??

Four teams are currently over the salary cap: Philadelphia by $3.892 million; Chicago by $2.508 million; Calgary by $1.429 million; and Anaheim by $.513 million.

Several others are nearing the cap. Boston, with Dennis Wideman yet to sign, is $2.338 million under, NYR with 3 RFAs and Shanahan left unsigned are $3.793 million under, San Jose with 3 RFAs are $5.249 million under, while Detroit is $3.642 under, but with Valteri Filippula left to be re-signed. They are in very real danger of someone making Filippula an RFA offer sheet which the Wings will be unable to match.

And there may be more RFA's offered deals with teams such as Ottawa over $11 million under the cap (with Vermette and Maszeros still to be signed, but even then Murray will have close to $6 million to play with.

John, you applaud Cliff's moves so far??? I could have made those moves, hell Wayne could have made those moves and he's an idiot. I have one word for you John, "Finger". Now that was a brilliant move. NOT.

I applaud Cliff's moves so far. Since McCabe doesnt seem willing to leave make Kubina the next over rated and over paid stiff to be a former Leaf.

If Sundin doesnt come back and I am hoping he doesnt and they trade Kubina they were be no one for McCabe to play with on the power play since thats where he gets most of his points.

Maybe in August or September McCabe will see that the Leafs will be a team of Marlies wearing the Leaf sweater and ask to be traded or we all can hope.

They have to bottom out for the next 3 or 4 years and get a top 5 pick at least to start rebuilding the team.

They should also trade Voskala and get a first round pick and maybe a good young prospect. When and if the Leafs start to win down the road in 4 or 5 years Voskala will be around 35 or 36 and wont have many good years left, so trade him now and start to stock pile the draft picks and no more trading away first rounders unless you flip and get 1 back.

After Fletcher is finished gutting this team hopefully Sundin will see the writing on the wall that they arent trying to win now and will sign somewhere else.

Go Leafs Go in 2012 or 2013!

Ron, that post below is not mine it's Pete impersonating me. A slow whitted 35 year old is exactly what Ottawa has, behind the bench that is.
Disgruntledfan, 2008-06-27 10:14:55

Cliff needs to find a way to Trade McCabe. Even if it takes 'til the trade deadline. Fletcher could get a 1st rounder. Kubina could also land a first rounder. Maybe Blake could be packaged with some insentive cash for a prospect.
Doug, 2008-06-25 18:12:58

And on top of that, Ron, Redden is a UFA, as is Liles. Unless you were suggesting each trade the rights to "negotiate" why would either team give up anything for two guys they can dicker with for free come July 1?

And why would Ottawa want a slow 35-year-old forward?
DisgruntledFan, 2008-06-23 17:21:43

Ron, are you a crack head ? Kelly signed a 4 year contract with the Sens for $ 8 million, good one though you clown.
Pete, 2008-06-21 01:23:03

Whoa baby

Redden and Kelly to colorado for Liles and Brunette.

Go AVS
Ron, 2008-06-20 15:45:48

Mayers for a third round pick is a bad deal. If they could have got him for a 6th or 7th round pick it would have been ok. One thing they should do is name him captain, he will have the respect of all the players at least he plays hard and is a physical presence and isnt afraid to drop his gloves to stand up for his team mates something Belak didnt do enough of his last year or 2.
