Will 'Hockey Night in Canada' be able to successfully replace the old theme?
Wed, September 3, 2008

TORONTO - The CBC received nearly 15,000 submissions in its quest to find a new theme song for "Hockey Night in Canada."

A total of 14,685 entries were submitted to the broadcaster's Anthem Challenge contest prior to the Aug. 31 deadline, CBC said Wednesday.

The network is holding the Canada-wide search after the rights to the iconic jingle that opened its weekly hockey broadcast for some 40 years were snapped up by CTV in June.

Will 'Hockey Night in Canada' be able to successfully replace the old theme?

I was surprisingly open to the change to something else other than the HNIC theme song. I believe CBC have already run other opening tunes, and video footage before the final games this year in the playoffs. Change is reality, and change is necessary, and therefore, change, in my mind is good. I did not expect the reaction that happened, once making that change, and I personally had not even thought about how there might be such a reaction. I play hockey and I am interested in watching hockey, but maybe I am not really a fan. Short for (Fanatic).

i'm curious at what cbc has in mind for a new theme song and it's finacial impact

First they bring in PJ Stock, and now this? Who are the people making these decisions? Hockey Night in Canada is going to hell in a puck bag!

Guess if CTV had any smarts, they'd snap up the rights to Stompin'Tom's "Hockey Night Tonight" as well and leave CBC playing "Bud the Spud".

way to go ctv you are the best channel on canadian tv along with tsn . the nhl will move the games to you in the future coz the cbc does not deserve them .lets just get rid of the cbc altogether

Man, is the "Brain Trust" at CBC comprised of monkeys? Or is George W. Bush running the network now?

But in all seriousness, this is a total embarrassment for CBC. This is yet another reason NOT to watch HNIC anymore. What will CBC do next? So far they've given one of their best play-by-play men (Chris Cuthbert) to TSN and now the most recognizable part of their flagship program (the theme song).

I guess it's only a matter of time before HNIC itself winds up on TSN. CBC, you guys are idiots!

Once again the C.B.C.has dropped the ball.I can't imagine an organisation funded by Canadian citizens,as having such total disregard for their feelings.Hockey night in Canada will never be the same.Seeing some of the crap the C.B.C. deems worthy of our tax dollars makes me think we really don't need publicly funded T.V.Lets get rid of the C.B.C.Kudo's to C.T.V.for recognizing a much loved, priceless Canadian tradition.

Good for CTV. The CBC operations people are missing the boat or maybe it is the political masters that are missing the point. I look forward to enjoying the sounds from my youth continuing!

Only the CBC can keep getting "it" wrong, curling,hockey---etc.

It's only a theme song. Sure I listened to it since I was kid but it isn't any less HNIC without it and it won't make TSN's hockey any better with it. The only way HNIC could get any better is to can Don Cherry and show more Blackhawk games. Until then I only watch it in the playoffs.
