Will 'Hockey Night in Canada' be able to successfully replace the old theme?
Wed, September 3, 2008

TORONTO - The CBC received nearly 15,000 submissions in its quest to find a new theme song for "Hockey Night in Canada."

A total of 14,685 entries were submitted to the broadcaster's Anthem Challenge contest prior to the Aug. 31 deadline, CBC said Wednesday.

The network is holding the Canada-wide search after the rights to the iconic jingle that opened its weekly hockey broadcast for some 40 years were snapped up by CTV in June.

Will 'Hockey Night in Canada' be able to successfully replace the old theme?

As long as CTV doesn't buy that bigoted moron Don Cherry, it's a great move. CBC has shown it is only interested in "culture" not running a profitable business. Not sure what having the 'Hockey Theme" on CTV/TSN will actually mean. it won't have the same feel, unless they change the name of the broadcast to Hockey Night , or something similar. $3M isn't much when your talking a multimedia comglomerate like CTV.

CBC is by far the worst channel on the TV and if they weren't government funded they would have been out of business a long time ago. What kind of government funds corporations to compete against private citizens anyways? Back to my point, CBC programs suck, little mosque on the prairie, coronation street, red green etc. the only redeeming show was HNIC. Join me in boycotting the Christian bashing corporation and encouraging free speech in Canada as well as better government spending of our tax dollars ... not on CBC.

It's very easy, I will follow theme song to CTV. The HNIC theme song was my way of knowing when hockey was on (nor much for watches), so now my tv will be set to CTV or TSN or RDS instead of CBC. Will CBC's HNIC be using Stompin' Tom's "Good hockey game" as there new theme?

Now, Only if we can get the Maple Leafs off of CBC... Any buyers?

Grant,

Change is good when it is good change - not when it is because of stupidity.

Yes, hockey still exist on HNIC, but it won't be the same.

Hockey Night in Canada is still the pinnacle of hockey coverage in Canada - with or without this song.

But, more people will feel at home watching a hockey game in CTV because it will give the feel of a Saturday end of week game.

CBC clearly screwed up on this. It's not that hockey will not go on - it will.

But, something with so much tradition with the CBC should have been kept.

They just threw it away for no good reason other than saving a few bucks.

What they should have done was cancelled Little Hoe House on the Prairie!

The CBC always seems to have plenty of dollars on hand to slag the conservative government. But when it comes to a iconic theme song endeared to the majority of Canadians they suddenly have neither money nor brains. lets see if the Libs can bail you out of this one.

There is only a few good things about CBC's hockey coverage and Bob Cole and Don Cherry won't last forever. There highlights of other games are sporatic at best. I use to think being Canadian was to watch Hockey Night in Canada on CBC, but know I can't wait for them to stop their coverage and let a real sports channel take over. Kudos to CTV

HNIC theme for use during 2010 Olympics? Does CTV not understand that the tradition is NHL Hockey, mainly on Saturday nights. NOT Olympic international competition. Might as well call this a good idea that fell short and is misguided. Now if CTV leased rights back to CBC long term, like 99-years, then hooray. Otherwise CTV is just a big corporate bully pulling money out of it's deep pockets. Look close on how CTV has gutted CITY TV and adopted the CITY TV small station feel somewhat dishonestly. CTV Everywhere. Shame

Are you people serious? Has anyone in their lifetime heard of anyone watching a sporting event to hear a theme song? The only losers here are BellGlobeMedia shareholders, who have stock in a company that just threw away three million dollars for absolutely nothing.
