Will 'Hockey Night in Canada' be able to successfully replace the old theme? Wed, September 3, 2008
TORONTO - The CBC received nearly 15,000 submissions in its quest to find a new theme song for "Hockey Night in Canada."
A total of 14,685 entries were submitted to the broadcaster's Anthem Challenge contest prior to the Aug. 31 deadline, CBC said Wednesday.
The network is holding the Canada-wide search after the rights to the iconic jingle that opened its weekly hockey broadcast for some 40 years were snapped up by CTV in June.
Will 'Hockey Night in Canada' be able to successfully replace the old theme?
If TSN/ CTV are smart (which, I don't think they are), they'll license that song back to CBC.
This, IMHO, is a travesty. And the song will never fit on TSN's NHL Tonight...no way.
It's the Hockey Night in Canada theme-- always has been, always will be.
Unfortunately, greed and stupidity has prevailed.

"Reason" should get a life. The song is simply not that important and all the brewhaha about it is why CTV forked out the dough to get it. It was opportunistic of them, but decidedly unsporting, and shows that they don't have enough confidence in their hockey coverage. They have to resort to gimmicks such as stealing somebody else's theme song. Wait a minute, this kind of reminds me of Harper's Alliance/Reform stealing the Conservative nametag from the PCs. In any case, an attempt at smoke and mirrors will not change anything. I think it's time for a new theme song

The song from Stompin' Tom is way better. Thats the theme they should be embracing
otherwise......
Get over it, people!!

Its a poor song and the only reason anyone remembers it at all is because of brainwashing. I don't tune in to watch a singing match and while we're at it, get rid of both anthems before games

Very smart move by the CBC, why waste millions of the taxpayers money on a song, that we have heard since the 60's. Use the "Nickleback " tune.
We will be back to watch games on CBC WHY? Because those idiots at TSN dont know how to shoot a game, and the sportscasters are pathetic, so called experts who are always wrong in their assesments.

don't worry as soon as Stompin Tom's "Good Ole Hockey Game" is played for the first time and we get our feet stompin and hands clapping, every one will forget about the old HNIC theme, (which i think sounds alot like the Hawaii five o theme) and CBC will look like they planned it, and they will be heroes again and TSN can continue playing the old HNIC theme to the Maple Leaf games cause thats all they ever show.

Don't worry

This is all about 10 - 20 seconds of intro music, (sure it's a catchy tune) , but who really cares once 'the game' is started , or over for that matter. I have watched numerous games on other networks, featuring hockey from all over the world and cannot recall caring about the intro music, it's all about the game of hockey.

HGA: You are wrong about the World Series being named after a New York newspaper called the "World". That is one of the biggest myths still out there. The "World Series" was once called "World Championship Series" because North Americans honestly thought they had the best baseball players (which was likely true back then). If you have any info from a reputable source to prove me wrong encyclopedia, MLB official website, etc. you're welcome to post it
