Will 'Hockey Night in Canada' be able to successfully replace the old theme? Wed, September 3, 2008
TORONTO - The CBC received nearly 15,000 submissions in its quest to find a new theme song for "Hockey Night in Canada."
A total of 14,685 entries were submitted to the broadcaster's Anthem Challenge contest prior to the Aug. 31 deadline, CBC said Wednesday.
The network is holding the Canada-wide search after the rights to the iconic jingle that opened its weekly hockey broadcast for some 40 years were snapped up by CTV in June.
Will 'Hockey Night in Canada' be able to successfully replace the old theme?
I say its time for change....play the hockey song by stompin Tom every week thats a song worth listening to and it the real hockey anthem

IT'S A NO-BRAINER, YES THEY SHOULD KEEP IT .... IT'S A CANADIAN TRADITION
Tony DiMarco, 2008-06-05 17:15:02
OF COURSE the CBC should keep the HNIC theme!!! It's a no-brainer question. The theme is as Canadian as the Canadian anthem, for heaven's sake! You don't fix what's NOT broken.

500$? what a bargain for a such a strong branding tool. TSN should buy the rights for 10 years and block CBC from going back to the theme once they see what a huge blunder they are making!

It is disappointing to hear that that this theme will be dropped. It is an important part of our culture that people can identify with Canada. It seems like $500 is trivial compared to the advertising dollars that the show must bring in. Bad decision to drop it!

I wonder how much Paul Anka still gets for the Tonight Show theme? Ha I think it's a small price to pay for one our last traditions. Only in Canada would they consider changing this???
Keith McGuire, 2008-06-05 15:56:04
Why doesn't CBC just buy the rights and own the song outright. That way they won't have to worry about licensing it.

Hard to say without hearing the alternative. If it's catchy then why not? There's a lot of years of being drawn to the TV by the opening chords of the old song. However, maybe this will be a good thing for the Leafs who have played well over 3000 games after this opening tune without one cup to show for it.

There are so many things wrong with CBC and they continue to eat up tax dollars running a poorly managed corporation. There are so many ways to save money but tinkering with HNIC tradition. This is another example of bad decesions and poor management skills.

I would have said yes, but I find it disingenuous of Claman to say she is "saddened" that they are dropping it. She has been receiving $500 a broadcast for it for at least the past 10 years. For a roughly 36 week season, even playing it once a week nets her $18,000 a year. No wonder she is saddened. For a short little ditty she wrote in 1968, I am sure she has been adequately compensated for it. If she is truly worried about its place in history, agree to sell the CBC the rights to it outright for their use for ever and ever.
