TORONTO - The CBC received nearly 15,000 submissions in its quest to find a new theme song for "Hockey Night in Canada."
A total of 14,685 entries were submitted to the broadcaster's Anthem Challenge contest prior to the Aug. 31 deadline, CBC said Wednesday.
The network is holding the Canada-wide search after the rights to the iconic jingle that opened its weekly hockey broadcast for some 40 years were snapped up by CTV in June.

Just like everything else Canadian anymore...get rid of it, likely for something "Made in USA".

No! No! No! First, the shoutout, then no additional teams in Canada and now this. They are crazy, we the fortysomethings grew up with this anthem. What are they going to play instead, born in the USA? Ther are Nuts!!!

My Dad died two years ago, but when I hear the hockey night in canada theme I think of him. He was a WW2 vet and hockey night in canada fan. I think a potion of the watchers will be so dishearted when this theme leaves, they may not care to watch the game. After all it only tradition, right.

This is a HUGE blunder - Marketing 101 is don't mess with a trademark that has become an institution! This is a very bad decision!

At first I was mad at the composer, but after reading I am mad at CBC. They are trying to become what I hate - ESPN and Fox. New songs, people yelling at me with their opinions without a moderator (PJ Stock), and changing th Hoststove format for the first few weeks. ERRRRRR! Do we have to change the few things that are good in life because some consultant said to! BOOOurnns!

I think the fact that we even have to ask the question if it should be retained is a sad commentary on the CBC. Of course it should be kept...it's the CBC we should get rid of. At least the theme is more Canadian then the network is anymore.

The CBC has got to be f****n' nuts! Whoever is responsible should be fired immediately! The HNIC theme has got such a presence. As soon as it is on TV the kids come running into the room because they know hockey is on. I am really angry about this decision!
